Navy Dads

How do sailors communicate to families while at sea?  Obviously cell phones won't work.  Thanks for the input.

e-mail when available and snail mail.....they tend to be so busy there is not much time for e-mail

My SR said something to us about getting a satellite cell phone.  Have you heard of that.  Thanks Paul for your replies.

he better check as that may be a serious violation of OPSEC rules

Perfect, thanks for the heads up.

as an example, when my son was deployed, Afghan President Hamid Karzai visited his carrier (Theodore Roosevelt)-- all electronic comm (save for official Navy comms obviously) was shut down for about 2 weeks prior due to security worries.  A sat phone would not be a controlled mean of comm...

He better remember that is is not like summer camp...the Navy will determine how and when he can communicate while deployed.

On my son's ship, an Aircraft Carrier,  there are public pay phones and public computers for email.  Though there are times as stated above,  where all communications are suspended for security reasons.

When they make a port visit,  he usually calls us or updates facebook with photos, comments, etc..

Snail mail is good for sending them goodies, like their favorite snacks. I have found that email works best for me and my sailor,  but my sailor has access to a computer as part of his job so it is convenient for him.
