Me

I am going to PIR in July. Will my Sailor want to go back to the room and sleep, watch TV and visit or will he want to go to the mall and out to eat? Just wondering if I should keep the room for after the ceremony? As you can see, I am really new at this!

Each sailor has some different wants - personally, I'd keep the room just in case and plan to be flexible.  A lot will just want to kick back and decompress and watch movies.  Some want pizza- some want a steak dinner.  My advice- play it by ear and adapt to what he wants.  Keep an eye on the clock though and plan to have him back to he base at least an hour before he needs to be.

thank you...kind of my thinking as well...I definitely will be bringing his phone :-) but not for him to take back to RTC

and last piece of advice- don't be taken aback if he wants to spend time with his shipmates rather than exclusively with you......those guys and girls are his "new family" so if they want pizza, take a group.  At my daughter's PIR, we had a dinner with three of her shipmates and their families.....it was a great evening of lots of laughing and stories.....

Ah a great tip. I will keep the options open and mention this in my letters. It is an expensive day so the probability of all graduates having family there or not is something to think about.

Sadly I will have to fly back Friday night. His sister has an event in Georgetown Texas the next afternoon. I have kept the room at the Navy Lodge so we can spend time there after PIR and then "Sarge" has the service that will take him back to base and me to the airport. I will definitely see if he has some shipmates who want to join us as well. I am the only one coming for my grandson and there may be others whose family cannot do this trip. Hopefully he has learned to look out for his shipmates!

He has...in the real Navy world that ability can make the difference between life and death.....this is serious stuff

Not sure about going to the mall, but your Sailor may want to do all of what you've mentioned as with what our Sailor did after PIR...

Our son had his PIR the 29th of May.  He wanted his phone, his laptop, a trip to the mall for new socks and underwear, a steak dinner and then just to relax at the hotel pool.  He wanted to have dinner with a couple of his shipmates but couldn't get that done.

Lory, you should read what Jim wrote. YOu may not have any additional time to spend with him other than at the airport.

You will find he will now be on Navy time, and it doesn't always coincide with your own.

thank you for all the great comments. I got my phone call from him and found out in boot camp he is the Religious Petty Officer and the Education Petty Officer...I am assuming this is role playing since he is just SR now. He likes it, which is all I wanted to hear.

I ordered him a challenge coin to give him after PIR with his ship on it. I am hoping this is a good thing too.

It will be a nice keepsake for him!
