I was a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) from 2002-2005 so I may be able to answer any questions you may have about what your recruit can expect to go through while at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. I trained over 650 of my own recruits and assisted other RDCs in training over 1000 more recruits.

"Thanks for the offer"

You're welcome.

"My son shipped 12-2-09 what happens during Christmas?"

Christmas day is considered holiday routine and will be treated much like a Sunday. They will get a few extra minutes to eat a much nicer-than-normal meal. They most likely will not do much (if any) training that day. What training they will do will depend on his RDCs and what they feel they need to do "in-house" in order to keep the recruits in a training mindset. Although, Christmas day is (or was) usually a relaxed day. Also, it will not affect the schedule since that day is taken into consideration when the schedule is made.

He shipped out this past Wednesday? I'm assuming he arrived at RTC that night? I guarantee he was given a phone within 30-60 minutes of getting off the bus. Recruits are told to call next of kin only. They are told not to call little Sally Rottencrotch but there is no way for us to know who they called. (And that call is only about 10 seconds long.)

Thanks for your posts! My daughter reported 17 Nov and is scheduled for PIR 22 Jan. Kayde was told that she is to be in Pensacola on 25 Jan. When will we know if she will be a "grad and go"?
Is there any way that we can get our son's division#? Our recruiter told me today that it is not on the email that was given to her. We know he is at Ship 4 and shipped Dec 1. Hopefully our mail is getting to him. Now we are wondering about PIR. Any thoughts.?

She is a grad and go. However, since she does not have to be there until Monday, I suspect she won't leave RTC for Pensacola until Saturday so you should be able to spend Friday afternoon with her after PIR.

"I know my daughter is scheduled to report 5JAN and the CS "A" School start 07JAN with a course length of approx 1 month. Would they have her go thru a long Indoc for a short "A" School like hers or just the Typicall 2-4 day NMT or PFM course instead?"

That I don't know. I'll see if I can find something out in the next few days. Sorry.

KastIron, hope you can help on this even if its an A School question! We have heard of a two week Indoc for the A school side of the house at Great Lakes. Other note Loved the Salley Rotten???? comment below, I still LMAO.....
"Is there any way that we can get our son's division#?"

You could try contacting the Public Affairs Office at:
Phone - 847-688-2405
Email - rtc.pao@navy.mil

Although, I'm fairly certain your son will receive his mail even without the division number. It'll just require a little more effort on the part of the mail orderlies in his ship.

"Now we are wondering about PIR. Any thoughts.?"

I have lots of thoughts about PIR. Anything in particular you want to know?

Kastiron,
How do they handle assignments to the 900 divisions nowadays? I was in company 936 Triple Threat in 1976.

Thanks,
Mark
Thank you so much. I have sent an email to that address. We know that we need to have the division# to get his PIR date and I was alittle concerned that he may not realize we don't know it. Surely we will get a call from him one day, but you never know. And we realize that no news is good news. : |

KastIron,
Thank you very much. We have yet to hear from Kayde(three weeks today since she left Spokane). We will plan on leaving Chicago on Sunday am so that we can spend Saturday with her.
One other question. I am having to fund Kayde's account to cover auto deduct payments(car insurance, cell phone, etc.) Any idea when she will get her first pay deposit?

From what I read, she should be getting her first pay about now. I saw it, I believe, on the RTC website that they will get their first pay in the third week. When I was in, they held it until we graduated and gave us one big check.
"Thank you so much."

Unless things have dramatically changed since I trained recruits: They are scheduled two phone calls (not including the night of arrival call) during training. As I recall, the first one is around week three or four and the second one around week six or seven.

I used phones calls as a motivational tool and would give them (or take them away) based on recruit performance. I would even give a phone card to really hot performers so they got a free call. Hopefully, your son's RDCs will allow extra calls...but that would depend on the division's performance.
