My son called last night. He stated that he was asked to participate in the Ceremonial Guard. It caught me off guard since he was excited about going to Corpsman school. He said he will be in DC for 2 years and then move on to Corpsman school.
In during some research it seems like and honor to get chosen or ask to go but it seems like a detour from his real career. I was wondering if anyone has a child in Ceremonial Guard school?

when did he find out about this? Was he already in Boot Camp or has he been planning on this?
They just offered it to him last week in boot camp. his PIR is 10/10/14. I have read in other places that in those two years he won't rank up because he has no rating. Also, there may be no assurances that his Corpsman job will be available when he is done with the 2 years. They told my son, yes he WILL be able to go to Corpsman school, but 2 years is a long time anything can happen.
It's a great honor to be chosen and i know it takes a great deal of work and training to participate in Ceremonial Guard events. I guess i was caught off guard with the change. Also, not being able to earn promotions, means you stay at the same pay rate for 2 years, life is expensive. Especially in DC area.
Regardless, i told him i thought it as great and i back whatever decision he makes. What's important is that he pray about it and include God in the decicion making process.
Thank you all for your input.
