Excellent point David,

Each command can write their own instructions providing they stay within the guidelines of the echelon command. What is OK at one location, does not mean it will be OK in another location. Finding the local commands instructions is the correct way. I have looked and am unable to find the applicable instruction for the Training Support Command at GL. And at a command as large as this one, there will be differences between departments and divisions. Normally the divisions follow the departments rules due to division officers are fairly junior.

But good point. Ask one the department chiefs.

Thats a good source for the info, however as w found out with our son at Corry they tend to follow their own policies. When he was there for A and C schools he had his cell and laptop from day 1 and signed up for wireless internet within a week or two. He was wearing civies and going off post around his 3rd or 4th week and before he even finished A school he had bought a "beater" car from a sailor leaving so he no longer had to pay for a taxi or walk. This while guys he was with in BC and were at NAS P'cola weren't getting off base until after week 4 or 5. So it depends more on each base and command. To be safe you can wait until he is there and checks with one of training P.O's to get the offical word for their class/school.

Greg,

My son started ET A school mid Dec in GL after a month and a half of waiting and was allowed his laptop as soon as he got to the A school side the first of Nov. Even while he was in phase 2 he could have it. Getting internet is a little bit of a challenge, however there are places on base that have free wifi. If your son is close to the galley, they have wifi.

Phase 2 is the transformation period, trial period between bootcamp and the regular Navy. They continue to have stricter rules governing their actions. Once they pass phase 2 based on performance, they are allowed the normal liberties of most sailors. Such as civies, no curfew, etc. It takes about 2 weeks to get through phase 2.

Good luck to your son.

My son's "A" school Phase 2, was he got to start wearing civilian cloths again, and the very minute he got to his "A" school, he was calling home, and asking for his cell phone and lap-top, but don't get caught walking around in uniform, and talking on the cell phone, my son got yelled at for doing that, during a tornado alert...go figure!!

Thanks,
I was told we could not give it to him untipassed phase 2. What is Phase 2?
They earn rewards. If they don't let them have a computer till phase two, do they have access to a study hall or library with online access to college courses? How long does it take to get to phase 2?

Greg - My son is in Pensacola for his "A" School and bought his laptop as soon as he had the ability to go online there somewhere to order it. I think he had it within 1-2 weeks after arriving from GL.

Does anyone know when the Sailors are allowed to get lap top computers for A-school for Corpsman in GL. My son wants to take college classes while on hold before A-school starts. They say it might be a long hold period. PIR 1-15-10
