on the Navy for Moms there is a 'Great Lakes A School Q & A ' site.

Within that site is a discussion of the lengths of various schools and the
sequence there. (If the A school is somewhere else like P'Cola or SD, that info is not posted). From that discussion I got the following for ICs

IC "A" SCHOOL:
SCC is 12 days long
ATT is 42 days long
IC "A" School is 36 days long

They also show an ATT for EMs and a whole string of courses for the engineering types.

Your son's ET program was outlined as follows:

ET "A" school:
SCC is 12 days long
ATT is 52 days long
ET "A" School is 98 days long

Our son had a 46 day ATT before moving to SD. His shipmates at GL were all ET - and his comment was ' they are here forever, I'm glad I am STG'.

Also note the count of days is actual class days - weekends and holidays do not count.

David,
Does your son have to do ATT before his actual A school? My son starts ATT for ET 11/16. He PIR'd 10/30. Just curious if the EM's and IC's also do ATT like they used to do with Basic Electrical and Electronic (BEE) school. I was an MM so not real up to speed on the electrical side of things.

Thanks

didn't see your note about going to SD . . .

Stand down for the holidays generally starts on Dec 19 and goes until Jan 3. The specifics will depend on the school and the location. Our son is in San Diego, actually at the Point Loma ASW Training Center. His place has those dates and is encouraging sailors to take leave during that time . Other schools in San Diego may have slightly different rules.

Depending on your son's orders, he should get to his chain of command as soon as he knows his location for the holiday dates (e.g. is he going to be on hold in GL, go immediately to SD)

Otto - what an experience for you ! ! ! From all that I hear, yours was the abnormal experience. Most of the A schools are pretty low key. (our son actually finished early - told us about it in the week after it was all over). Always having family for an occasion is great. . . How big a deal probably depends on the school and where they are going after that.

Our son's A school was a grand total of 20, with 18 of 20 going on to C school at the same location. Every parent I have talked to for sonar school that went to graduation found they were the only parents there.

Scott - your son will want civilian clothes, maybe a laptop, cell phone, etc.
should be working to phase up so he can get liberty when not on
duty or in class. If he is at GL for school the duty rotation is now
every 4 days.

Scott, "A" school graduations are usually small informal affairs. That being said, your Sailor seems to take a little more pride in the A school graduation than the Boot Camp, because they are not sharing the stage with 800 to 1000 other sailors, and the A school signifies a special personal achievement, so family attendance if at all possible is very important. My son told me it meant more to him to have family there than at PIR. I was lucky to have the CPO's allow me to present my son with his graduation award. It was a great experience.

Good to hear such positives - I think the sailors appreciate the change that comes with A school compared to boot camp.

A number of schools have a stand down at Christmas, starting Dec 19 and going to Jan 2. There will be no classes during that time and places like the
A school at GL will seem like a 'ghost town' as sailors are encouraged to take leave.

Caution - leave is not automatic. Your sailor will need to put in a chit and get it approved.

They should talk to the chain of command on what is the story for their location and what they need to do.

Thanksgiving break will probably start at noon on the Wednesday and end that Sunday. Same rules on liberty and leave apply.

Our son finished A school in San Diego last week and now has orders for the rest of his C school, also in San Diego. He will be their until next summer. (he will have been in for over 16 months by the time he finishes school and has a fleet assignment).

We are on the East Coast, so will settle for seeing him at Christmas this year.

Gary, P-cola is a great place. I've been there two times in as many months and enjoyed myself. The weather should be fine around T-day. As long as your son has his phase 3 card out of the way(by Thanksgiving he should), he should be good to go off base (unless he has duty station). Get your reservations made soon. I stayed at Navy Lodge and it was very nice. It's not that far from Corry Station. Many fine hotels in the area and if you use the internet, you can get some good rates. Be sure to check out McGuire's and the downtown area, very neat.
