Hi Cecil... and welcome. The statement about helos is not true. You need a 4 yr Bachelor degree and be commissioned as an officer to qualify for flight school. All student pilots complete indoc and primary flight training before a pipeline is chosen.
Now, there are enlisted to officer programs, like STA-21, but they still require the sailor to complete a bachelor's degree, usually within 3 years and then be commissioned as an officer.
There also was a test program, Warrant Officer to Pilot Program. I don't know if this program is still available or not. It's for sailors in rates E-5 to E-7, with an associate's degree or higher and who would be able to be commissioned before their 27th birthday, provided they meet the other qualifications of the program.
Your son probably should speak with his Career Counselor or an officer recruiter.
If I may ask, if your son wants to fly, why did he pick AZ? It looks to be mostly a clerical/ administrative rating.
Congrats on your son'r PIR this coming Friday.
The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is involved in exercises in preparation for deployment. The Lincoln publishes a weekly paper called the "Penny Press." This most recent issue had an interesting story about Helo pilots and crew on board. It give a glimpse into their life. My son, Emmett, is in the squadron referenced, HSM-77, Saberhawks. If your family member is about to deploy, it is interesting to read. TIM
I am very new to here. Although I served in the Marine Corps in the late 70's (before the internet) I am now a wholeheartedly a NAVY Dad. My son just went through PIR and is in school to become an AZ. I find myself thirsting for any info (poop) as we used to say about what he is doing and what to expect. Thanks for being here folks. I am sure that over the next few years we will all become our own family of sorts!
Jim, the AW page looks great! I really like that site you are working from. I checked a few of the Sea/ Shore rotations on there against the NAVADMIN and they appear to be current too.
Thanks Jim and Paul!
I am still willing to help out if needed.
looks like you two have things well in hand!!!!
OH...and AWS needs to include Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadrons (HM) under working environment.
That's much better Jim. But the wording for "These technicians may also volunteer to fly as Naval Aircrew", etc. needs to be removed from the other aviation ratings.
let me think on it for a little while...want to come with the easiest for you and for us!!! Thanks!!!
Paul, the new enlisted rotations were published in NAVADMIN 201/11. I have it saved on my PC. How would you like me to do this? I can copy the individual ratings to Word, edit them and email them back to you. I will only send back those parts that are changed. Or is there a different way you want me to do this?
I think most sea/shore rotations have changed, but finding that info is pretty tough...if you have any "secret" sources, it would sure help abunch....BUPERS has a bunch of it but it is all scattered in a million different places and tough to collate into something that makes sense!!!
