Paul...sure, I would be happy to help. I think the Sea/ Shore rotations for several ratings have been changed too.
are you volunteering to help "clean up" the ratings info? We posted the info that was available at the time and as it was it took a lot of work to get what we have posted up there....any help to get corrected info in a form that we can post would be appreciated!
It looks like the Navy Enlisted Ratings list for aviation ratings is several years out of date. The only rating that can volunteer to fly as Aircrew is AW, with a sub rating of AWR, AWS (helo) or AWF, AWO or AWV (fixed wing). The consolidation started in 2005 with helo and finished in 2009 with fixed wing. Here is the article from Navy Times.
Does AWF fit in there somewhere? One of my twin sons who are in the Navy is a Flight Engineer on the P-3 Orion and has the designation AWF.
ATF/AIRC is Advanced Technical Field/Air Crewman. These are aviation technical rates that volunteer for aircrew. They can be:
AD - Aviation Machinist's Mate
AE - Aviation Electrician's Mate
AME - The Aviation Structural Mechanic- Safety Equipment
AMH - The Aviation Structural Mechanic- Hydraulics
AMS - The Aviation Structural Mechanic - Structures
AO - Aviation ordnancemen
AT - Aviation Electronics Technician
AW- Aviation Warfare Systems Operators
After you graduate boot camp, you will pick/be assigned one of these jobs, then attend that A schools. When training in that job is complete, you will attend flight training.
Best of luck to you. A little hard work in the beginning really pays off later.
Thanks David, I have so much to learn.
Tim, they normally get a grade based on 100%, but more important to them is the top percentile where the cut off for advancement is. He may mean he was in the top 4%. For the AW1 (E-6) exam last spring the cut off was 4.25% and my son was in the top 2%, so he made it.
My son called, got a 4 on his Petty Officer Third Class test. I have no idea if that's good or bad. Any ideas?
my son is in afganistan until around thanksgiving. he skypes and uses facebook on his ipod touch so we're in touch most every day
Check out the latest Air rescue Navy Rescue Swimmer video I just uploaded. Pretty cool!
