Thanks for telling us about your visit David....The Intrepid made a lot of history...I just recently finished reading Intrepid by Bill White and Robert Gandt....it's a great book about a great ship!! If you haven't had a chance to read it it is worthwhile.......

I asked about all the old below decks compartments on the Intrepid. Seems being a museum in New York City, most of it is rented out as office space. There were enough offices and sleeping compartments to house over 550 FBI agents after 9/11. (The wife and I were supposed to fly home from Amsterdam on 9/13, got stuck in Europe on business, had to live on the expense account for awhile.)

Neat it is good to tour your old ship. Mine was sold for scrap...she is gone.

On Friday, July 23rd, I went aboard the USS Intrepid for the first time in 45 years. They have changed a lot, but I found the dumbwaiter from the hanger deck to our shop in the galley deck. It was nice to tour the old 'Fighting I' after all these years, and nice to walk around the flight deck without tripping on tie-down chains.

Today a smart phone does more that most of the gear from a WWII sub outfitted with 1970's technoolgy.

I understand. There is gear on the planes that is to be "need to know". That's why these Sailors need back ground checks.
When I was in we had stuff on the sub that was cutting edge for the time and I was not to be in certain areas unless my duties required it. We had several items that were for experimental.

I know that "just the Dad status." My younger one is in that mode. His older sailor brother tells him to tallk to me, but hey I'm "just the dad". The younger is working with the Navy recruiter. He is getting closer to an all expenses paid trip to Great Lakes. I've been praying for him and it looks good. After the Coast Guard Turn down I wonder if he would turn his back on the millitary. He seems eager to start his Navy time. I over heard some one ask him why him wanted to go Navy. His answer was good for my heart. My son said "Well I have two granfathers , a father, who served n the Navy and my brother is in now.
