from Navy Times:
Keel laid for newest Navy aircraft carrier

Staff report
Posted : Sunday Nov 15, 2009 8:17:23 EST

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and the Navy marked the keel-laying of the newest aircraft carrier Friday in ceremonies at Newport News, Va.

The ship is named after Gerald R. Ford, the 38th U.S. president. Ford’s daughter, Susan Ford Bales, is the ship’s sponsor and authenticated the keel when her initials were welded onto a metal plate.

The carrier, numbered CVN 78, represents the first new carrier design since the 1960s. The ship will have a smaller crew than previous flattops and incorporate new technologies, including an Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launching System, advanced arresting gear and dual-band radar.

The new ship should join the fleet in 2015

Congrats to your sailor, Jim! The Pelicans have a rich and honored tradition, and I think it is a great honor for your sailor to go to VP-45.

Hello all, regretfully I am having to leave Navydads :(. For reasons that are sketchy on the Navy's part my son was discharged Aug. 18th, 2009 (it wasn't dishonorable). I will keep my profile on Navydads so any messages or discussions I have started will not be deleted. I wish all of you the best on your continued journeys :).

I just created a group for AE's. If you have an AE sailor please Search AE Aviation Electricians Mate
and join. Looking forward to meeting fellow AE's. AT's welcome too.

Hello, back from my trip to Japan and Hong Kong. Final pics are up, plus a video of the test drop of a torpedo from their Helo during the previous tour. What an awesome time! Plus getting to speak with the Chiefs, was inspirational while meeting all the AW's for a gathering to honor them from both squadrons stationed at Atsugi Airbase. They appreciated a father there showing support from back home to all of them. I can't tell you what an awesome night that was!

My son is there going to C school. I just got back from JAX last Monday. I watched the P-3 crews, and I noticed they take every precaution. I worry for my son as well, but you gotta trust that they are all doing their best.

Jim, is he at JAX?

Wow Nice trip! Congrats to Garrett on the fine job. Winning the confidence of the Chiefs confirms his abilities.
