No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Gary, Congrats to you and your sailor. I got the call from our sailor too.. mine has a cold again but she's excited and when I seen her for Christmas she did mention to me that your son is very nice. See you next week!

We received our SR's form letter on Christmas Eve, while not as nice as a phone call, it was greeted with all the happiness of a great gift. Roll on February!!!

We had the best Christmas ever this year!!  Received a call from our daughter Christmas morning!!  A special thanks to Sailors for Christmas and all the volunteers and sponsors that put this event on each year for the recruits.  The recruits were given a VIP treatment on Christmas day.  Pictures and videos are posted on their Facebook Page "Sailors for Christmas".

Typically the first 4-10 days  after the new recruits arrive at RTC are called Processing Days or P-Days.  Around holidays and sometimes for unforeseen issues (flight delays, severe weather, etc.) P-days can last up to 14 days.  Although recruits are assigned to a ship and division upon arrival, these assignments are not final and they do not move to their designated ship until P-days are over.   Unplanned events may change that ship assignment.   Your sailor's recruiter may give you an address a day or two after your recruit arrived at Great Lakes with a particular division that may not be final. This is why NavyDads always advises you to wait for your sailor's form letter with his or her correct address.  That letter typically arrives 5-10 days after they have shipped to RTC.

Thanks very much for all the responses. We have our fingers crossed that we will get a Christmas call from him, but I reckon he and those that went up with him are the junior recruit class and I don't know if that will have any bearing on any privileges the holiday may bring. Since we don't have an address yet, we'll sit tight for the moment. Thanks again. I'm sure this won't be the last time I ask for some input.

It isn't on the navy's dime. They can purchase phone cards at the NEX where the pay phones are located.

Todd Leonard he will be able to make calls on the navy's dime but so far my daughter has made 2 calls I believe after she got there so phone cards will not be of use to your sailor
