No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Heads-up... be advised that the whole DoD (but our Navy especially) will be doing a "review of current procedures for security and access to military bases" which is Navy-speak for they are probably going to initially over-react and start conducting background checks on ANYONE entering the base that does not have a Military ID until the pendulum swings the other direction and they find a better way that is not as extreme. Believe me- there are MANY ways they can improve security on bases without resorting to such drastic measures, but I will bet my Retirement Check that is going to happen- sooner than later, I am afraid.
Oh yeah. I know there is no "unsupervised" visiting on the base and that everything was a direct shot and "funneled". For some reason I just thought there was an additional step in driving on base vs. walking on. Thanks guys!!
Correct, Bob. There is no just walking over to the hall without the entire process. My wife went (because our daughter had A School at Great Lakes following basic and PIR) for the Fourth of July celebration on-base that year, and even the areas for seating outdoors, food and where bands played and marched, was very well controlled. Even picture-taking is restricted to within the Hall, not outdoors at all, at PIR. Later, we went to the normal Visitors Entrance on the other side of the base, and were not allowed beyond the main "welcome" area. Even the Sailors had to walk in pairs, so our daughter who was just dropping off some Mall purchases, had to wait for someone going to the same location before she was allowed in.
We were able to walk right through the gate at about 6:20. They opened it a little early. There were guards there who checked our ID. We then walked to another building right next to the parking garage and were checked again against the guest list. We walked through the museum (which is very cool and you're allowed to take photos). after that we waited in line inside that building. Once they opened the doors to the PIR building, we left the building we were waiting in, walked through a little open area and back inside to the PIR building. They checked our stamped hands (which was done when they checked us against the guest list) and we entered the building and walked to our seats. It was a very smooth process and was nice being at the front of the line. It can get cold standing in line outside that early in the morning!
Jason: No way. That is a military base, and civilians are NOT allowed to wander around. You MUST go through the authorization process, show IDs (we even took our passports) before you're admitted. And there are armed folks watching the civilians movements, as well as serving as hosts.
Bob, I've read, on here somewhere I'm pretty sure, that if walking in, you can walk directly to the PIR hall where as people driving in have to get through the gate, park, then go through an additional check in process. Any accuracy to that at all? Also, What time did you leave your vehicle and walk to the gate to get in? We're getting a ride from Sarge to PIR and we were thinking of getting dropped off at 0530. Should we be there earlier?
ONLY 10 AND A WAKE UP GENTS!!
We parked in the train station across from the gate for $3. First ones in! We got there about 5 a.m. and brought breakfast to eat in the car. When we got to the train station, there were already cars lining up at the gate.
I neglected to mention that Alex is Ship 13 Division 421. Grad date 08 NOV 13. Anyone else have the same?
and Cody- you ONLY need that gate pass if you plan to drive onto the base and park. If you are taking a shuttle, which is what we always recommend, you do not need the pass.
