@PaulS, sorry for the delay in answering. Life has been hectic.

I hope all is going well for your son in BC. I know this is a tough time for you. Make sure you go to PIR!

After BC, he will go to DLI in Monterey. Depending on his language, he will most likely be there over a year. He will go in holding, waiting to class up (waiting for the class to fill up and begin.) He will have to complete training in order to phase up for more privileges. It is a tough and grueling program and there is an 80% wash out rate. Tell him to study his ass off and don't get too involved in the party life (there is some of that). It is only a year or so and will set the stage for his career. My son graduated with honors and is still seeing the benefits of that in his assignments. He seems to get the good assignments. He is also an E5 now. Was advanced upon graduation to E4 in March '11, took the E5 test in Sept and advanced in Dec!

Feel free to message me with any questions. Glad to answer all I can.

JimA, CTIs are stationed pretty much by their language. Asian languages go to Pearl Harbor; Middle East to Augusta, Ga; European to Ft. Meade, MD and Spanish to San Antonio, TX. There are exceptions for Meade, but those fresh out of school follow that route, for the most part.

@BillMarshall, my son is a CTI. He graduated last March and is stationed in Augusta, GA. They (he and his buddies from DLI) thought they would hate it, but actually love it down there. He said the "F" school they go through at Gordon is tougher that DLI! That is saying something. But it is only 3 months long. As for you daughter thinking about OCS, she may change that once she gets going in the CTI world. She would no longer do the linguist job and would be made an Intel Officer. Many CTIs opt to stay enlisted because of that. CTIs advance pretty quickly. Our son made E5 exactly two years in! He left for bootcamp on 12/1/09 and made E5 on 12/1/11.

You definitely want to make a trip to visit her in Monterey! Depending on her language, she will be there for a while, but will probably see just a small portion of it because they are kept so busy. If you go for graduation week, she will have a lot of free time and you can site-see quite a bit!

Greetings all. Navy Vet from the late '70s here. My son was in 2 years this past December 1. He is a CTI, already made E5 and is loving the Navy. He can't tell us anything about the job, only that it is the coolest job in the Navy! :)

BillG, the hardest part from a parent's pov is the no-contact during bootcamp. The time will pass pretty quickly and you will be amazed when you see your sailor at PIR! Take the time to read the FAQs on NavyDads and have your wife get on Navyformoms.com (you can too for that matter). There are tons of good info on these sites that will answer many questions before you think of them.

Good evening...
My first day as a member and my son leaves for BC on Mar 13th as a future CTN. My Dad was a Seabee and I was a CTT2 so it's a family tradition for us too. Really glad he was able to follow me as a CT altho it's really changed. The "C" used to stand for Communications and we couldn't say the word Cryptology out loud. Fortunately, we live in Pensacola so it'll be easier for us than most ofd the families.

Totally agree, Cryptology is where it is at!

no1ref, too funny, he told me the same thing at one point.

He has made it home and I am enjoying him so much. I had a balloon and sign ready for him when he got off the plane on Tuesday. Ya know I didn't realize how much I missed him until I saw him.

Marcy:

Don't worry mine has been in for 18 and if he told me he would have to kill me.

Mr. Gump what rate is your son?

Hi everyone, I don't get on here too often but wanted to say hello. My sailor will be home soon  and I can't wait. He has been on deployment since the end of June on the USS Port Royal. I am so excited. It just seems like it has been forever since last May when I saw him last. He is a CTR. He is an E5 too. He is based in Hawaii. He has been in for 5 yrs this August. I don't know much about his job but I guess I am not allowed to, LOL.

Congrat's to all of your sailors for all their advancements.
