Navy Destroyer:
The destroyer evolved from the need of navies to counter a new ship which made a devastating debut in the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. This was the swift, small torpedo boat that could dash in close to the larger ships, loose their torpedoes and dash away. The world's navies recognized the need for a counter weapon and so the torpedo boat destroyer — later just "destroyer" — was born. From the first U.S. destroyer commissioned in 1902 to the famous ships of World War II to the Spruance-class to the Arleigh Burke-class, the U.S. Navy's destroyers have been evolving. And that evolution continues into the 21st century with the coming of the DD(X).
Description:
These fast warships provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, and can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.
Background:
Technological advances have improved the capability of modern destroyers culminating in the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class replacing the older Charles F. Adams and Farragut-class guided missile destroyers. Named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat commander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the USS ARLEIGH BURKE was commissioned July 4, 1991, and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea. Like the larger Ticonderoga-class cruisers, DDG 51's combat capability centers around the Aegis Weapon System (AWS). AWS is composed of the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar, advanced AAW and ASW systems, VLS, and the Tomahawk Weapon System. These advances allow the Arleigh Burke-class to continue the revolution at sea.

Should have posted this last week, the USS McCampbell DDG 85 finally left dry dock on 2/29 and is getting ready for sea trials. Skyped with my daughter yesterday and she says they are working often to 10-11 at night. She finally gets to got to sea!

Thank you, Chris! I've already got the camera packed... didn't want to forget it. I'll try to get a couple of pics of the Decatur while I'm there and post it for you. Should be a fun day on Thursday. I will most likely be spending the entire day on the ship because Billy will be on duty that day. It's bring your mom to work day, lol. But, I never get bored with being on the ship... it's exciting to me.
I'll post a comment about my trip when I return. Thanks again for the well wishes!

Thank you, Chris! Billy will have 3 days off over the Thanksgiving weekend and will be spending it with another sailor and his family in Long Beach. Billy has visited there a number of times and they have kind of adopted him. I will be flying out to San Diego next Wed. on the 30th. On Thurs. I will have the priviledge of watching the Frocking ceremony for my sailor and others who are being promoted. Billy said that the ship's crew had something to present to me as well. I believe it has to do with my support for the ship's crew during this recent deployment by sending lots of homemade beef jerky, phone cards and other goodies in care packages. I've also got plans to spend the New Years weekend holiday in SD as well, so I have that trip to look forward to.
I hope you and all our group members, families and sailors have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Excellent, Paige! Congratulations. Our daughter (they're in port) has a little over 24 hours off for Thanksgiving, but has to report back for duty Friday. She's going to spend time with some family friends in California since she won't have leave until nearer Christmas to come home.

Congratulations to your sailors for their accomplishments! My son was also one who received word on Friday that he was advanced to IC2.
John good luck and best wishes to your daughter on her first deployment. It could be a tough one, but it most certainly will be exciting for her.
