"how cool would that be" Sounds like a "Doc" in the making for sure.
As mom and dad it is hard to understand why they would request
something that is a road to where they might end up in danger.
They are a special group that soon refers to men in their unit as
"my Marines" and the other side answers with "no one hurts our Doc"
Why they do it??????They would have trouble giving you a easy
answer for that one
Just some thoughts after reading the posts below...My son went into the Navy with the rate of Dental Hygienist Assistant. During A-school, he said he was "told" he had to go to FMTB at Camp Pendleton. He recently went through FMTB and he is now stationed at the Naval Hospital, and he has told us he may be assigned to a Marine unit. He said that if they want, they can "voluntellyou" as he put it, and that is why he had to do FMTB. But I'm starting to suspect that he's volunteering and telling us the Navy is making him so his mother won't be upset with him. But it does sound like him. Can not figure out why the Navy would want a Dental Hygienist Assistant to do FMTB, unless the sailor wanted to. I may be wrong, he may have been told he has to do this. But I remember before he left for boot camp, he told me the recruiter said he might train with the Marines, and "how cool would THAT be"? He was excited about that aspect of it. Like I said, I may be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time, but it just seems to add up that way. I think my wife is starting to think that herself, as she has questioned herself as to if he is volunteering. BUT, I want him to be happy, and if hearing "Corpsman Up!" makes him happy, then I am happy.
letters from home and your support is very important for boot camp
and all the other schools they attend. It will give her a ton to do
and remember but worth it in the end.
double checked with my son and he said they serve with Marines
but not in combat...Navy picks who goes to FMTB and when- training
is the same.
Good luck to your sailor.............SF Randy-go
thankyou. I guess it all depends on how well she does in A school and if there's an open billet for it too.

FMTB would be after her Corps school in San Antonino, they do have
women in FMTB,teaching and students but I dont know the % that
go to FMTB.

Hi there...I am wondering do all HM's go through FMTB school? My daughter will be PIR on 11/10 and will be heading to San Antonio at that time.
Hi Brenda and welcome
To try and answer some of your questions, first he will need to make
it thru Corps school. He can request green side while in Corps school and they will note it in his record.
The Navy decides when he goes to FMTB (Green side) my son worked at hospital for a yr before getting his request passed thru.
Till he gets thru FMTB he will be blue side. They have FMTB schools
on the east coast and west coast. good school not easy but needed
to get an idea how the Marines work and how the corpsman fit in.
You can join FMTB group when he moves to that level, and watch
from both sites here at Navy Dads
To be a" Devil Doc" is the goal of most corpsman but not all.
FMTB schools have video posts on U tube and this site for an inside
look at that school.
Hope this starts to anwer your questions ?
Give your son our best and wish him luck..dont give up its a great
start in the Navy and Marine corps life.

I'm so new to this website and not quite sure how I can get some of my questions out there, but I hope I'm doing this right...Right now my son is in boot camp with a PIR of 11-10-11. He went in as a corpsman, and I know there is talk of a GREEN side and a BLUE side. I know that green means he will be with the Marines out in the fields. But what amd when is it determined what side he goes to? Does he have a choice? Does it happen durning his A school? I hope if anyone knows these answeres I will be able to find the replies..Thanks for having this site and the different groups to which might meet ones needs
Very good article and video of what our Corpsman family members are doing in the field.
