Gudfinna, I got to my son's boot camp graduation, but not A school.  In these days of smart phones & Flip video cams, maybe one of the parents who is able to attend can take a video & email it to you (or post it on Navy Dads!)

Yes thats right ,I am from the land of the  "Eyjafjallajökull "  or Eyja fjalla jökull ,which was everyones favorite or not ,last year due to spewing ashes all over Europe while erupting,but its quiet now ,though there is still some bubbling lava,and is still being monitored. I think thats pretty good though as Jim said,that you could figure that out. Thus its hard to just hop over there,without it taking long,but my son doesnt want me to come over,and him not having any time to spend with me and he wants to have his Fmtb training done with,before he takes his leave. I have been looking into this training and can see that it is a challenge,though I m sure he will do fine. Just a shame they closed the base here,so no Mac flights anymore to us. But I am sure you are right about the maturing,I just noticed when he was in divng school in the keys for 4 months and graduated  as a diving instructor,and then worked as one for 6 months,before enlisting that he was maturing very fast,having to be responsable for his diving group and teaching them right. He is pretty independent now for sure and I am so very proud of him,as you can see with the bragging. But I am sure you are too of your Sailor,because they have a lot of courage and care for others more then themselves,which is very noble and it takes character to be like that. Well I wasnt going to write so long,but its so good to have people out there who know about this,since there are not many where I am at.

I got to chat with my son on facebook,and he is going to do the recruiter duty right after graduation from corpsman school and then go to the FMTB and after that he is going to take his leave.He figured it would be better for him to do that first,so I just have to wait to see him for a little longer.He did not want me to attend his graduation because he said they wont have any free time then and there and feels its too far for me to travel,just for a couple of hours. Even though I would love to be there. Strange not to be able to see any of his graduations.Since he will be visiting me after FMTB. Then he will be deployed within some months after that. He has become a  educational petty officer in his school,so 3 times a week he has evening  classes with some others,so he is very busy,but happy at the same time =}

Yes, recruiter duty is the way to do it (add extra days at home and the time is not counted against you (you will not be required to burn your leave); however you have to contact your local recruiter in advance so it can be approved). You have to wear your uniform and hang at the office and talk to your friends and shuffle paper work- the ultimate goal is to share your experiences so you can help bring in new recruites into the military. At 16:00 you can return home for dinner at mom's. Once you head for your prem duty station getting back home can be challenging, esp if you deploy or you are stationed overseas.....

Welcome Gudfinna,

 If he is going to FMTB in CA it will depend of when his class will begin. Most Corpsman will get two weeks leave right out of A-school but he can use it later if he desires. Our son had to take his leave because his next school began two weeks after A-school ended in May and the C-schools make you take leave over the December holidays. If they don't use the leave they lose it I believe, so most take it when they can. Thank your son for his service from us.

Thank you for the welcoming .I did not know they would cover his trip home,but then again they probably wont cover his trip since I am living overseas,and I would guess they only cover it to the place he was when he enlisted. would it be possible for him to save his leave until he graduates the boot camp there

Hello to you all,it´s great to have become a part of your group.My son is currently in A school for corpsman and he graduated bootcamp 5th nov. They just got to pick orders a few days ago,and he is going to 1st marine div in CA after graduation from A school. I wonder does anyone  know if its possible for him to take leave to come and visit,sice he has  not taken any since he went to bootcamp in september,or is it like he will not know until a couple of days before,if he is grad and go ? I appreciate if anyone knows this .

Have him check into the ROTC program, with letters of recommendation

from his present station etc. He can become both an officer and nurse

thru the Navy......many have done it check it out
