I also qualified at S8G prototype in Ballston Spa, NY. I understand that the students on hold may be frustrated, but I would encourage them to make the most of the additional shore time they can get. They will miss it when they hit the fleet and deploy...

My son, Aaron, is in his first week at RTC GLakes, and is headed for
Nuke "A" School after Boot Camp. He is planning on MM, which he should be able to get with no problem.

I was in for 8 years as a nuke sub ELT, from1984-1992.

Hello. I have just joined the Nukes group. My son, Nick is currently in Prototype school in Ballston Spa, NY. I was wondering if anyone else in this group has a sailor currently there? Their training has been put on hold since November due to instructors not following proper procedure. I am wondering if anyone has any more info as to when training might resume. It is frustrating for the Nukes since they should be completing their training this month and would be ready for ship duty, but instead have no end in sight.

TFJ nuke dad 08…I understand your concern about nukes not going to BESS in Groton. Nukes get well versed in safety issues once assigned to a boat. They are responsible for completing “ship’s quals”. These are requirements to get their dolphin or fish. These checkouts cover safety, firefighting, emergency procedures and damage control. My son says they run casualty drills all the time. Nathan attended firefighting school (1 day) in Groton after he reported to his boat in Portsmouth, NH.
He is currently a rider on the USS Maryland (his regular boat is the Greenville). He sent us an email Tuesday saying he was scheduled for his final board to get his dolphins yesterday. No word on results. Tell Frank good luck and thank him for his service.

Looks like Chritmas in Goose Creek! My wife and I have decided to drive up and surprise our son on Christmas Eve. His wife is in on the surprise. We saw our son in October when he came down due to his brother being in ICU in the hospital for a week. He never left his brothers side and had to leave and go back on duty before his brother recovered. His brother will be coming with us to surprise him on Christmas morning. We are really looking forward to the trip because who knows how many Christmas we will have him once he is in the fleet. The great thing is that his duty schedule at prototype has him off Christmas and the day after.

It is a desirable path and yes they are in short supply especially on subs. Rob has only been on his boat for little over a month but, his LPO and Captain seem to be thrilled that he is there. I know that ELT's have gotten a bad rep lately considering what happened on the Hampton and the crew not taking readings as they should.

Hello all,

I have a daughter Kira who is a Nuke on the TR and currently deployed in the Gulf of Oman and a son-in-law Rob who is a Nuke-ELT assigned to the USS Scranton SSN-756 with both of them based out of Norfolk. They met at NNPTC in November of 2006 and have been married for a little over a year.

Hi, my son nick is at goosecreek mid-way through A school. He's working hard and enjoys being in the nuclear program. Hopefully he will be able to come home and visit after A school. You must be very proud of your son, congratulations.
