Great read Paul - thanks for sharing!
nothing demeaning about Shellback ceremonies anymore...that went out years ago
"Radio-active" Nucs, funny. From what I've heard/read of some of the equator crossing rituals, even as a young Sailor I would prefer they were less demeaning, but that's just me. Have fun, but not at the expense of someone's dignity.
LukeH is correct I teach Amateur Radio technician classes to the staff and students that are interested and available, The first classes were only available to staff to evaluate, We had 12 staff pass the license classes. They reccomended to Capt Fahs that we teach the students in "hold status" and we have had 22 pass the Technican license. Several are now members of our local Ham club. Capt Fahs and the staff agree this activity enhances the students knowledge and gives them a great extra curricular activity. MMCS Clarence Preston, one of the Hold staff leaders is my contact and can give any of the students more information. I am a volunteer who does the classes for free but we do charge the students for the materials and the test session. You can learn more about the local club at tridenthams.org I am also a retired ETC(SS) reactor division LPO and EWS
Ham = Amateur Radio
Who takes those classes? The students would be too busy except when on hold. (I would think a nuke ET would be able pass the Technician Class exam with ease.)
My sailor is actually just about to leave the Navy after 6 years and I never heard of any incidents of hazing from him over that time. Yes, nukes do sometimes do stupid things from time to time for which they pay dearly but hazing not so much. My sailor said that even the crossing the equator ritual, much to the old hands dismay, is now voluntary and way watered down from what it used to be years ago.
Only thing my son mentioned, when he was in A school, was there was one guy who was harassing someone. I don't know the details. The other sailors pulled together to let the offender know that wasn't acceptable, and reported the incidents to the SLPO. The offender was given one opportunity to mend his ways, but didn't last much longer in the program. And that is exactly how it is supposed to work.
Tom,
Can you explain "Ham" classes to me? I'm ignorant but very willing to learn. Also, I ass-umed that all the teachers were active duty at NNPTC. But I know many retired AF personnel near our AFB here that re-hire as a civilians.
I'm sure there are exceptions, but from what I understand the Nucs are a generally a cut above. And of course, I'm probably a slightly biased proud Dad.
Our sailor has been through the pipeline and in Navy long enough for two re-enlistments, and never heard of hazing. Seems some people like to stir up old stories or ideas to make you worry. Just stick with the people here on Navy Dads.
