My son is stationed at Little Creek, VA. He is supposed to leave tomorrow for Dominican Republic, then to Haiti. Anyone else have seabees going there?

I have a Seabee in the 133, I am very proud of. This is his 3rd deployment with them. But I am sad to say, I am not looking forward to this one.

from NavyTimes.com:

Two Seabee battalions gear up for Afghanistan

By Lance M. Bacon

More than 1,100 Seabees will deploy to Afghanistan as part of the 30,000 additional U.S. forces headed to the region, increasing the Navy’s ground presence there by 29 percent.

Two battalions are gearing up and will land in Afghanistan between January and March. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4 will deploy from Port Hueneme, Calif., and NMCB 133 will deploy from Gulfport, Miss. Each battalion contains about 580 Seabees.

Some 3,700 sailors are already in Afghanistan. Portions of two Seabee battalions have been there since January 2009. The rest are mainly explosive ordnance disposal and medical personnel. Another 208 sailors are building schools and roads.

“Our Seabee battalions are on the leading edge,” said Rear Adm. Mark Handley, commander of 1st Naval Construction Division in Norfolk, Va.

When expanding the footprint of a forward-operating base in tough environments, Seabees “bring extensive and complex construction capabilities that make them the engineer force of choice,” he said.

The deployment of the two battalions will require personnel tempo waivers from the chief of naval operations. Since 2007, the Navy has said a unit’s “time in homeport must be greater than or equal to the length of the last deployment before deploying again.” Going beyond that requires a waiver.

Although Handley would not go into specifics, he said the deployments likely “will be slightly longer and [time at home] will be slightly shorter.” He said he expects more information in mid-January.

Ultimately, doubling the Seabee presence in Afghanistan will result in adjustments to the worldwide Seabee deployment schedule, Handley said. Roughly 2,600 Seabees are deployed to some 20 countries, supporting a variety of humanitarian missions and contingency operations.

For the Afghanistan surge, heavy construction equipment and mobile tactical vehicle replacements will be armored before it’s deployed, according to service officials. Both Seabee battalions completed preparatory training and were scheduled for a February deployment.

NMCB 133 was already turning toward Afghanistan, and its recent training was focused on the regional mission. NMCB 4 was originally heading for the Pacific, but its preparation included a full range of operations, making them capable to deploy anywhere in the world on a moment’s notice, Handley said.

NMCB 133 is no stranger to the region. Fifty-six “Runnin’ Roos” were among the first to deploy for Operation Enduring Freedom in November 2001. Roughly half went to Forward Operating Base Rhino, and the rest of the team began rapid runway repair and construction at Kandahar.

NMCB 4, the “Fabulous Four,” has seen its heaviest action in Iraq.

Hey Paul, gotta agree with you 100% .Pretty sad statement from some individuals. At least the homeowners assoc. found some backbone to do the right thing.

this is a late post Steve, but the whole thing with Col. Barfoot was so amazing to me....as far as I'm concerned, if a Medal of Honor awardee wants to paint his house sky-blue-pink with striped polka-dots....so be it! He earned that honor!! And over the American flag...sheesh.....

Hi Erin..... I don't know if you heard or not,but I heard yesterday on Fox News
that Col.Barfoot has been allowed to keep his flagpole in place.Evidently the homeowners assoc. couldn't take the heat{:-) Have a good day!
