Hey Ed, my son graduated August 2013 and is now assigned to the Abraham Lincoln also. What is your sons rate?.
David, we all know and understand what you are going through. It is a blessing to get that phone call. Write him early and often as he will enjoy getting those letters. We are in Tyler, by the way, not too far from you.

Hi David. I would also like to thank you for your service! My daughter is in division 312 and graduates this Friday! We are driving up to Great Lakes, leaving here on Wednesday. Cant wait!

Hi David, I also want to say thank you for your service. One thing my wife thought of when our son went through boot camp was to go ahead and write him every couple of days so that when we got the letter we could send it all to him at once. I thought she was a little silly but did it anyhow. Turns out it was a brilliant idea! It meant a great deal to him. He said when he opened and read all that had been going on he felt more connected to home and it gave him a great deal of encouragement at just the right time. Turns out that wife of mine is a pretty and smart cookie! We are in Krugerville (just east of Denton) quite a nice drive from where you are.

Hi, David.  Thank you for your service!  We have a son in the Navy who was in boot camp 13 months ago.  He's on the USS Abraham Lincoln in Newport News now.  I wouldn't worry too much about the form letter.  It will get there sooner rather than later.  The form we got from Great Lakes took quite a while to arrive.  By the way, we live on Toledo Bend lake near Hemphill, not far from Nacogdoches.

What's up Proud Navy Dads (and Moms) of Texas.  My name is David Sanchez I served proudly on the USS Georgia and USS Alabama Trident Nuclear Submarines and my son has joined and is currently in Bootcamp. We are from Nacogdoches, TX. I am anxious to hear from him. Received the quick call when he arrived and his phone came in the mail but I have yet to receive the form letter with his address and PIR date.  if there are any other parents with a son or daughter in bootcamp let me know.  God bless

Well, as life is dynamic, my son's advancement has "passed the grid" and he has been assigned to another part of the world. After a full and honorable period of serving on the USS George Washington, he is, as of this writing, in Norfolk, assigned to the USS Bataan. That is an especially special source of pride as we birthed James at home in Mesilla, New Mexico (on purpose). Our family has been in that area (Las Cruces, NM/El Paso, TX - I'm native El Paso, Martin Parmer is my 5X greatgrandfather) since 1886. As background on a bit of history about Bataan:

About 80% of the American forces that fought the 3 month long battle in 1942 were ranchers, farmers and plain folk from New Mexico and West Texas. They faced starvation when supplies were cut off, to the point of emaciation, but kept fighting alongside Filipino forces until the ordered surrender to save who was left. Those who were captured and forced march to the POW camp suffered great brutality until the survivors were rescued by McArthur 3 years later.

I grew up with the children and grandchildren of those at Bataan. James has the distinct honor in the history of the USS Bataan of being a true Son of the Rio Grande to serve on her. As he told me (in so many words), "Dad, I just want to help my Band of Brothers make it to their beach parties in whatever capacity I can". God bless them!

If you get a chance please check out Operation Lone Star @ operationlonestar.com. My friend, Jim Conely is the President of this great non-profit organization. The group presents our wounded warriors with a special challenge coin that depicts a picture of the Alamo and the words "I shall never surrender or retreat".  I have seen Jim present one of these coins to a Houston area wounded warrior and it was truly touching.

NMTSC CPOs, Selectees Beautify Downtown San Antonio...

Story Number: NNS130912-20Release Date: 9/12/2013 11:19:00 AM
By Larry Coffey, Navy Medicine Education and Training Command Public Affairs

SAN ANTONIO (NNS) -- The Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC) Chief Petty Officers Mess and FY-2014 CPO selectees provided the muscle for a local community outreach project Sept. 10 designed to beautify downtown San Antonio.

Twenty-eight CPOs and seven CPO selectees coordinated with Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson and the San Antonio Main Plaza Conservation Society to perform a fall beautification project on the city's one-acre main plaza in the heart of San Antonio.

"The project provided the Navy Medicine Training Support Center Chief Petty Officers Mess and the selectees an opportunity to engage with the local community as well as showcase the pride associated with being a Sailor stationed in Military City USA," said Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman (FMF) Donald J. Allbright, the NMTSC N-3 Student Services Program leading chief.

The San Antonio Main Plaza Conservation Society provided top soil, mulch and more than 250 flowers for planting. The Navy volunteers weeded the beds, planted the flowers in the new topsoil, and spread the mulch.

"Once we finished the Main Plaza area, we moved over the Bexar County Purple Heart Memorial where we pulled out every weed that had been growing and picked out every piece of trash," said Chief Hospital Corpsman (FMF) Santiago Martinez, an NMTSC N-3 Student Services supply chief. "Then we planted purple flowers donated by the county to help give the Bexar County Purple Heart recipients the respect they deserve."

For Chief Electrician's Mate (select) (SW/AW) Catherine Morales, the day was about spending time with the chiefs and lending a hand in the community.

"I had an awesome time!" said Morales, an NMTSC Navy military training instructor. "I got to spent more time with the chiefs and learn more about them. I enjoyed helping the community and making the naval presence known. I really enjoyed seeing the chiefs having fun and seeing that they are not different from us chief selects."

When the work was completed, Adkisson brought Master Chief Hospital Corpsman (FMF) Shanon Best, NMTSC Command Master Chief, and the CPO selectees into a session of the Bexar County Commissioner's Court, where county budgetary, personnel, and tax and revenue decisions are made. Best and the CPO selectees were introduced and thanked by the court members.

"Today's events were a lot of fun," said Chief Hospital Corpsman (select) (FMF/SW/AW) John M. Ross from NMTSC's Training Support/Education and Training department. "I enjoyed getting out and seeing the locals, and they really appreciated us being there to help improve the look of that area. It was an opportunity for us, as selectees, to get to know the men and woman we will soon be working with very closely. It was also a team-building event to showcase how everyone works together to get a job completed."

NMTSC is Navy's component command, providing administrative and operational control over Navy Medicine staff and students assigned to the tri-service Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) and San Antonio-area medical education programs. NMTSC is an echelon-4 command, reporting to the Navy Medicine Education and Training Command in San Antonio. NMETC manages formal Navy Medicine education and training services, and is part of the Navy Medicine team, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea and on the battlefield.

Can't wait for Sept 6th. My Son, Nick is ship 3 div 337. He's showing them how Texan's do it. He sounds great on the 2 letters & 2 phone calls we have gotten from him so far. He says he can't wait to get some real Tex-Mex food. He's off (across the parking lot.) to A-school for Quartermaster training after PIR. Tired of explaining that a Navy Quartermaster steers the ship. They all think he hands out jocks and socks. lol!

Good, John M. Kuhn.  The fun, excitement, and (sometimes) fear of the unknown will continue to build all the way until PIR.
