On Fast Attacks like Craig said, deployments last 6 months with them rarely being extended by a month.  Underways for our sailor have lasted anywhere from less than a week to just over a month.  During deployments if the sailor has an international phone they can call when in port.  Likewise on underways they can phone.  Email is through the boat and is sporadic as was said but it is available and sailors love receiving emails while gone.

Correct, I was talking about the fast attacks not the boomers.

Depends on whether it is a ballistic or fast attack sub. The ballistics have two crews - blue and gold. They share the boat and alternately take it out on shorter 2-4 month cruises.

Underways last any where between one week and two months. Deployments last no less than 6 months and sometimes get extended to 7. The missions for both are always classified. Sometimes you may here from your sailor from a friendly port if they are given some liberty. Otherwise you can send them emails that are censored and not sent in real time. They have a boat specific email address. Hope this helps

Thanks. Now please help me clarify underway and deployment. Underway is short trips for training and checking out the boat? Deployments are actual assignments for the boat that may last several months? My nuke MM sailor starts Power School in this summer, so it will be awhile before he sees the fleet.

Generally no it does not take two deployments to receive Dolphins.  Yes, most of the checkoffs must be done while underway but as Craig added, it can be done sooner.  Our sailor received his dolphins after his first deployment and the next underway.

No he served one partial deployment last year and several short underways this year. I understand it is quite a bit of work, but a lot can be accomplished during the short underways.

Congrats! I've heard that it usually takes two deployments to get all the sign-offs for Dolphins. Is this correct? Can it be done in one tour?

So proud that my son Dale Dougherty received his Dolphins yesterday on the USS Albuquerque.
