Just joined this group my son was recently assigned to the IKE.  He got there just before they deployed.  This is his first deployment hopefully he will enjoy it.  I was in the US Navy for 8 years as a Damage Control Man.  If I hear anything I will let you all know as long as it is not aginst OPSEC.

Hi Kimberly,  This is my first experience with deployment as well.  This site has been a huge help fpr me.  I know it will help you as well.  What is your son's rate?  Mine is an AD with the E-2C Hawkeye.

Husband told me that they have phones set up throughout the ship that they can call out on. they are like payphones... He said that the calling cards that they buy on the ship are 20.00 for 15 minutes....which is outrageous! So..if your wanting to send a care package...maybe slip an international calling card or two in there.. i havent sent any of them yet but he seems to act like any international calling card will work. If he has skype or something installed on his cell phone, tablet or laptop, and is able to make a port call that has good wifi..he can skype you for free..i dont know if you have any international calling plans on your phones but it can get expensive.

I Highly Reccommend having a webcam with a microphone so if they have access to skype on a portcall you can actually see them as you talk...makes it a little easier and is even better than hearing their voice!

I hope this helps...I don't know much but i will share what i do know...of course keeping opsec in mind.

This is my son's 1st cruise and I've been able to talk to him a couple times via ship phone but of course he has to wait his turn.  He has his cell phone with him. Question: are there any calling cards or apps for his droid so that he can call while on the ship? any suggestions are appreciated.

ept1974  Yeah, I am making plans for that as well.  Will you be participating in the Tiger Cruise if they offer it?
