A follow on thought... the only other group that wears a red hat is the Damage Control Training Team (DCTT). DCTT's job is to train and sharpen the Flying Squad and Repair Lockers. DCTT is made up of officers and senior enlisted personnel. This is also a secondary duty.
@ Chris Bond: I promised a fuller response and let myself get wrapped up in work and getting ready for the Chief's exam. Anyways to your question on the Flying Squad and whether your son is changing rates (jobs).
Aviation Apprenticeship is a program where E-3 and below sailors go to the fleet undesignated. This means that they have the opportunity to see other rates and strike for one they like. It sounds like your son has been looking at the Damage Controlman rate (DC). Where is his present work center (shop)? he could be part of the DC shop or up in Air dept. I'd bet on the DC shop because of the Flying squad appointment.
The Flying Squad is a team of first responders onboard the ship. Your son gets to wear a red hat showing him to be part of the Flying squad. This will allow him head of line privileges for chow and possibly the ship's store while he is on call for emergencies.
This is the #1 Firefighting team Onboard. He responds first then turns over to the Repair Lockers for the long haul. Everyone onboard is a firefighter. It is that or jumping into the sea.
I hope that this answers your questions. As for the infrequent emails, there may be computer availability issues or other conditions that may be holding him up. Don't give up and keep sending.
My son just sent a short email saying he made the firefighter team aboard the Stennis. Said he gets to wear a red hat and cut all the lines. My question is, what does this mean? He is currently in the aviation apprenticeship program but has wanted to be damage controlman since joining. He's excited, as am I, but we're not exactly sure what we're excited about since that's all the information we have. Did he switch jobs? Or is this kind of like being a volunteer fireman in a small town? Where he has his primary job, but if there is a fire he comes a runnin? What does "cut lines" mean? Is the red hat kind of like a probationary fireman? Any help would be appreciated. Not sure when we will hear from him again. We're pretty fortunate that we hear from him every four or five days. Any longer than that and my wife threatens to call the Navy and find out why he isn't emailing. Luckily I have been able to stop her so far. I'd hate to be the sailor on the ship whose mom is on a first name basis with the admiral!
My Son says its a definite maybe on a tiger if so Im there again :)
Excellent pic Bill
Kris, Do you mean the group pic around the JS plaque? All that I know is that my youngest grandson is in it. I'll let you know as soon as my son lets me know what the group is.
Bill -what group is that picture of?

For you, men that served, you are right!! I'm "speaking" as a mother!!
