Bill, my son likes being a GM. Beside V.L.S. he is a 25 mm gunner. He has been to three C-Schools and is hoping for more. If I were to say what his dislikes are, it would be that his ship is mostly a test platform spending much of its time in Hawaiian waters. Give Brett my best and as always thank you for being a friend and keeping us up to date on his activities.    Gary T.

Hi Gary, it's good to hear from you. I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost both of my parents when I was young. My Dad at 18 and my Mom at 29. The pain never goes away but it will become bearable. You are in my prayers.

I had a typo in my post. He has been in for 28 months, not 18.

Brett is determined to advance as quick as he can. He is considering OCS but doesn't have all the info yet so for now it is just a thought. He has been busy doing NAVY stuff ( painting the entire port topside! )  His command has had him jumping like crazy and his MC wants him for all the security details but Brett doesn't know how much more he can do and still do his VLS. They've got him stretched pretty thin.  Now it's just underways and training for deployment. They go out this fall. As of now they said at least 7 months.

I hope all is well with Nick and he will do fine on his test.   He made the 1st one with ease, right?  How is he liking VLS?  Brett's ship goes in next year for all new refit and he is really looking forward to it. He loves that stuff.  Please keep in touch and drop a line. Godspeed my friend. Bill

Bill, glad to hear about Brett and his promotion. Brett sure has excelled in his Naval career. I don't see anything stopping his upward mobility.

My son will be testing for GM2 in Sept. He seems confident he will do well. Hopefully he will fall into the upper half of those who will be promoted. He is currently home on emergency leave ref: my mother passing this past week. I can not say enough about the American Red Cross and the NAVY/Marine aide society.  Luckily Nick was off California with his ship porting for several days. His flight home was with a lay over as will be his return. I wish he could have been here under better circumstances  but he made it home safely and we are enjoying our time together.   Gary T.

Hi everyone, I apologize for being away so long. I have been working WAY too much!!  Just updating my son Brett's status for this, his second year, and give everyone an idea where they can go with their rate and other choices they have.

Brett has been in for 18 months and has been busy with schools, training and testing. Today, May 23, 2011 he was promoted to E-5, Petty Officer 2nd class and just returned for one of many underways. These past few months he has been doing "shipboard protection systems" which is joysticks and cameras for the un-manned 50 cal machine guns. He has also done SRF-A which is Security Reaction Forces- Advanced, VBSS, (visit board search and seizure) and small arms marksmanship. He also is lead GM for the onboard M-16 training for the new Sailors and doing his regular duties for the VLS (vertical launch systems).  He served his time in the galley, cranking they call it. Everyone has to do time there as a way of appreciating others rates and jobs, did his 12 weeks and is glad to be done with it!!!

I will be back soon with more info and if anyone has a question, please feel free to ask.  Until then HOOYAA!!!!  Go NAVY and Godspeed to our Sailors

Glen, has your son taken the GM2 promotion test yet?
Comment by Gary T. on April 12, 2011 at 9:07pm
Hello Glen! I haven't heard anything about a promotion slowdown. I do know there is plenty of upward mobility in the GM career rate. Much more then in a majority of other rates.

Hey guys - just out of curiosity, are any of you hearing anything about promotions slowing down across the Navy?  I'm hearing that some promotions for enlisted personnel are taking longer than in the past - I have NO idea if that's true or not.  Anyone hearing anything about that?

Just a brief note, if anyone has any questions and are new to the GM group just ask. I do check this group often as do other GM DAD'S.
