I received an email notification from Paul (Admin) that spoke of the discussion "FB Phone discussion" in this "Japan Dads" group we're part of.  The question was "Daughter has Orders to Japan any one have ideas for phone service over there".... For whomever was looking for this information - we have been communicating with our son who is in Sasebo aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) via several methods.  First and foremost is free... we use Skype video weekly to see my son and his family.  We chat daily via the "Messenger" app in Facebook.  Some ideas for pay-as-you-go is to use the Skype provided telephone app and dial your sailor's phone direct at only 2.3c/min.  We have never had to use this since our sailor or his wife is usually near their phone or tablet and can answer a msg in seconds.  Onboard ship my son has the ability several times a week to use the internet provided by the Navy and we use that from time to time to chat.  Video or audio takes too much bandwidth though while they're at sea and operational needs of course trump personal needs.  I will suggest one more method that is great fun, a great hobby and works wonderfully - and that is to have a ham radio license for you and for your sailor. Provided the sailor can break away from work or home duties to use it, it can be used 24/7 as your link across the pond. Establishing a text link between you that you could potentially leave up and operational 24/7 is a great thing to have.  I sure hope there was someone that really needed this info?   When I selected the link for the question the website replied with "Our Apologies, this page was not found."

It has been 3 years since he shipped out to Yokosuka but my son has received his orders for his next command.  It's off to Norfolk, only about a 5 hour drive, needless to say his mother was thrilled.

I have started a group for Korea families.  I have no answers, only questions.  If you have any questions or especially if you have information to share, please join!
