@Mitch-I understand exactly how you feel, our son Ryan has been in for the same length and as all his boot friends left Great Lakes he remained for school. Finally he received orders for the USS John C. Stennis, what a great morale booster but he seemed a little taken back when the ship left and watching us on the dock :(. As you send your prayers to your son and crew we do as well, take care Mitch we are all here together for our kids!

We were able to talk to our sailor briefly also Tony. He has only been in the Navy since October. He would never admit it to me, but I could tell that he is a little scared. I am praying for his strength and protection daily! As I pray for the entire ship and crew daily!

Did you know, the U.S.S. John C. Stennis (CVN -74) has the anchors of the U.S.S. Forrestal (CV-59). Senator Stennis was instrumental in her construction and commissioning of U.S.S. Forrestal (CV-59).

Thank you for the updates. Please keep us posted, we will be praying for the injured and all on board the Stennis. It is a very dangerous place to work.

the Navy.mil story:

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Ten Sailors aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) were injured March 30 when an F/A-18C Hornet assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 101 suffered a catastrophic engine failure and subsequently caught fire.

The injured Sailors were working on the flight deck near the jet when the incident occurred at 2:50 p.m. They were initially treated by the ship's medical personnel.

Four Sailors have been flown to Naval Medical Center San Diego where they are in stable condition. The pilot was not injured.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and there is no significant damage to the ship.

"I am extremely proud of our crew," said Stennis Commanding Officer Capt Ronald Reis. "The flight deck of an aircraft carrier is an inherently dangerous place, but our personnel are well-trained to operate safely in this environment. They responded quickly, professionally and with purpose, extinguishing the aircraft engine fire."

The cause of the mishap is under investigation.

USS John C. Stennis is homeported in Bremerton, Wash., and was conducting Fleet Replacement Squadron Carrier Qualifications in the Southern California operating area at the time of the mishap. VMFAT-101 is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

this is what I heard:

Four sailors were flown to Naval Medical Center San Diego where they were in stable condition. The six others were treated for burn injuries on board the carrier. None of the injuries was life threatening
