"Moored, Shift Colors. Just arrived to the beautiful port of Jebel Ali. Eager for some R&R and to see the sights and experience all Dubai has to offer. The Burj Khalifa dominates the skyline in the distance – this is definitely a “post-card” port."
  • Mark Rokes

Looking forward to the Tiger Cruise. Does anyone have a suggestion for a hotel close to base?

  • Mark Rokes

I am pretty sure the base is Pearl Harbor.

  • Mark Rokes

    Thanks

I have been researching my options today.  I'm planning on getting to Honolulu a couple of days early.  Hoping to spend a day or two with my son.

  • Wayne A Bradford

Looks like the Tiger Cruise is canceled until further notice !

    From the 5th Fleet:
"As the Nimitz Strike Group continues to proudly serve in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility, I want our friends and family to know that we will not return to homeport as originally scheduled. I will keep you informed when new dates are determined for any port calls en route and our return home. We look forward to being reunited with our families, but we are also honored that our nation puts such great confidence in us that we were asked to stay and serve. I am tremendously proud of the great Sailors and Marines serving in the Nimitz Strike Group. Thank you for all your support."

Nimitz Strike Group, your brothers and sisters at arms got your back...

2 weeks ago, my son took the written portion of the ESWS and passed on the first try.  Today he went before a nine member board for 2 hours and passed the oral portion.  So now he's FC-2(SW).  We are very proud of him, and can't wait until they all return home safely.

USS Nimitz Arrives in Naples, Italy

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Nathan R. McDonald, USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Public Affairs

NAPLES, Italy - The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), along with embarked Carrier Strike Group 11, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, and Destroyer Squadron 23 arrived in Naples, Italy for a port visit, Oct. 30.

The visit allows Nimitz Strike Group Sailors and Marines the chance to experience the local culture and customs, as well as a variety of recreational activities, after being at sea for more than 70 days.

The ship’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) office has set up a number of tours and hotel stays while Nimitz is in port. The tours include trips to Pompeii, Rome and the Vatican, and Naples.

“It is very exciting to have this unique opportunity to visit Naples on a Western Pacific deployment,” said Capt. Jeff Ruth, Nimitz commanding officer. “The crew has performed exceptionally well, meeting every challenge presented to them on this deployment. They deserve this great opportunity and will certainly enjoy the sites, tastes and sounds offered in this superb port.”

The port visit came as a surprise for Sailors and Marines aboard Nimitz.

“It’s exciting,” said Damage Controlman 3rd Class Jonathan Feinberg. “I’m going to get a hotel room, enjoy all the sites and talk to my family.”

Nimitz left its homeport of Everett, Wash., March 30 for a scheduled Western Pacific deployment and is currently supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

My son is really enjoying this port stop.  His grandmother (my mother) was born in Italy.  My son posted on his Facebook page that he walked into a bakery, and the guy behind the counter looked just like his older brother!

  • Steve Swanner

Just heard from the son, dates are set for the tiger cruise. Flights are booked and I am excited. Can't wait to see him and all the others.

  • Dave Smithers

Did you receive anything concrete like we did from the XO on the ship the first time? Most of us are waiting for official confirmation before we purchase tickets.

  • Steve Parker

I also heard the TC dates from my son.  Nothing from the XO, but apparently they announced it around 24 hours ago.  Looking forward to my week in Hawaii and the TC experience with my son!

  • Joe Gillespie

Could someone Private message me the dates. I've heard from my son but he is not sure the dates are set in stone.

  • Wayne A Bradford

I'm going to throw this out there what I'm wondering ...... Super Typhoon Haiyan just went through the Philippines  ... A humanitarian stop?

  • Joe Gillespie

Good question Wayne. Another reason to wait on booking this trip.

  • David Hughes

is there a way to get close to the port dates via email?  My wife and I are headed to Cali to great our son, but have not heard anything of when they may get in.  I know wall posts are not allowed and when i was in, actually talking about when and where we were porting was taboo.  If that is still the case, then i am good with that.

    thanks

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

you all can communicate via private message.....just not in the open please!!!  Your sailors are not supposed to communicate dates via email....that about leaves phone and snail mail.....

  • Marc Pageau

I also would like someone to private message me with the dates. Have be unable to confirm new dates with my son. And need to start thinking about flights.

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Gary

Wayne I'll keep my eyes peeled and ears out if I hear of anything in general with regards to humanitarian aid as I'm flying out tomorrow evening...I've had this trip scheduled not specifically for the typhoon but will keep you all posted...Currently this disaster is heading for Vietnam...http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/western-pacific/2013/Super-Ty...

Hello everyone! My son just finished A School, and he will be stationed in Everett Washington. He will be on the USS Nimitz!  He can't wait to get to be aboard the carrier!

  • Dave Smithers

This is my son's first deployment so I am a rookie like him. I was wondering how often the Tiger Cruises are offered. Does each carrier offer a Tiger Cruise each and every time they return from deployment or are they just offered occassionaly? Anyone know?

Welcome back to stateside & Mahalo USS Nimitz Sailors!

Moored, Shift Colors. Aloha, Hawaii. It's wonderful to be back in the States! Looking forward to our Tigers arriving and enjoying the beauty of this place. Still, it's a humbling experience to look out over the flight deck and see the USS Arizona Memorial and know that 72 years ago this week they sacrificed all their tomorrows so that we may have ours. - USS Nimitz (CVN-68)

Great day on the Nimitz !

Not sure how to get my picture right side up ?

    Any clues ?

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

you have to rotate and upload in the correct orientation...there is no on-site editing capability in NavyDads

  • Mike Baumgartner

    Thanks Paul.

I did find if you tap the pic it turns around when viewing.

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

that is very odd....of the hundreds of images I've put up here I have never seen that behavior!!!!

  • Mike Baumgartner

It looks right in my file ?

    But uploads wrong.

    Then views ok.
