We got an e-mail from our LO today (getting the lingo down). He said that this phase of OCS was “brutal” but he was doing fine. He is getting about 4-hours of sleep each night. He was glad he trained so had before reporting up. Nothing like running in a hurricane…
He said they were not getting mail, is that normal? He has only been there 10-days.
Don't worry about not receiving mail up front. We had the same concerns. Apparently each Company is different in the way that they receive mail and how often they can get phone privileges. They are kept so busy that when they finally get time to write they don't have the energy to write-sleep is more important for their survival. I think we have received 4 letters in 10 weeks. Sleep deprivation is part of the process so don't get too worried if you haven't heard anything for a couple of weeks. Our lo didn't even get email privileges until the 10th week. As far as responding just remember that everything they get can be monitored....Good luck.
Hi everyone, its so great to read all of your comments. They are sooo helpful. I was just reading JoeDeChristoforo's discussion about our LO's and us "playing by the book" I couldn't agree more. My girlfriend has stressed to me multiple times that its so upsetting when people don't follow the rules because everyone ends up paying. I know it might seem petty that we can't do or say this online or we can't say that.... but it's making us and our LO's practice for the Navy when it can really become a matter of life and death. I would really recommend checking out his post. Hope you all are doing well and wish you and your LO's the best of luck!
Hello everyone,
We just received a letter from our son, who started three weeks ago today. As we understand it, he has completed the "Indoc" phase and will move to more classroom and leadership training next. We received a three minute phone call, but could tell his words were guarded. We were very encouraged to hear that he's "hanging in there" and the rigor of the first three weeks has steeled his resolve.
I am very grateful to all of you for your contributions and for the website. Keep up the good work.
Anyone have an idea about graduation... any limit to how many family members can attend? Is it usually on Friday? And is it the Friday ending the 12th or 13th week?
Thanks
Our LO called tonight and it was a great call - an answer to prayer for both of us. He is just finishing the 4th week of Indoc (used to be 1 week, then was 3 weeks, now apparently is 4) and didn't have to roll into H class. From here forward, the chance of needing to roll is slight.
He's healthy and getting plenty to eat - said the food was actually very good, but they only eat at three specified times. The amount of sleep is the one bid defecit. He's glad he chose the Navy and should graduate 5/28. He also expressed how encouraging the cards and letters were but it's important to not send packages or food or anything but letters and newspaper clippings.
He said the norm is just one phone call during indoc, but in this phase he'll have more freedom to call. What a great relief and encouragement for us! We're so proud of him.
Congratulations! I hope you enjoy every minute of it. What an accomplishmnent!
We heard again tonight from our son who has just completed week 5. This week was much different than the previous 4. More school time and a lot of information to remember. He really enjoyed the Naval history part. We are planning to attend graduation 5/28 if all goes well.
Hey there James
Thanks for the reminder about hotel rooms. I got our familiy's set up. They are all kind of pricey!
We will definitely continue to pray for them all. God is faithful.
My daughter (planning to pilot) is in 16-10 and called for the first time Sunday (yeah!). Then a letter arrived today (double-yeah!). Her least favorite time of the day is the three meal times ("taste? they don't give us time to taste."). I'm amazed by what our LOs are going through.
My son will be graduating from OCS in September and I have heard if you are a veteran you can wear your old uniform to the graduation. Anyone know anything about this.
Hi Steve, I don't know about wearing your old uniform but I can say mine probably doesn't fit any how. Our son also graduates from OCS Sept 30th. Our LO's must be in the same class 21-10
Congrats on you soon to be graduates. Newbie here, son started this week in class 02-11E. Hope you vets hang around after graduation to get the rest of us through this.
My son also started this week in class 02-11; not sure if he is Company E or F. I'm already having a tough week, I can only imagine what they are experiencing.
To the Mikes
My son is in class 20-10. He was probably screaming at your kids on Sunday as they began their indoc week. This is a truly miserable week and they may begin to question why they ever signed up for it. But if all goes well in 9 weeks they will look back in amazement at how much more they can accomplish then they ever imagined.
Thanks for the comments guys. Mike, good luck to all of them. I expect you and I will be sharing angst the next 12-13 weeks. We should hold out the option of holding a grudge against Bill and his son pending how all this works out. Bill, knowing what they have gone through, you must be extremely proud as well as happy the worst is over. Good luck to your guy in the fleet. Will let you know later on the grudge thing.
Bill & MG: Agreed, on the angst and the grudge thing. :) Remember: When this is over, we're all on the same side. When my son was asked if he was looking forward to OCS, he replied that he was looking forward to it being over. This will be perhaps the worst 12 weeks of their Navy career (one can hope). Easy for us to say, but "this too shall pass". Looking forward to meeting you Mike in November. Wow, that's seems so far away.
Mike,
A grudge? How dare you! As he explained to me in his email (after week 4 they get email privileges and although they don't have much time for it, the communication is a lot easier), he was just prepping them for when the Marine Drill Instructors take over. Also expect your son to be hoarse when you get his first call from him. Everybody screams at each other a lot. It's considered the polite thing to do.
Bill
Like typing ALL IN CAPS !!! I assume you replied in mock indignation. Just kidding about the grudge thing. Like I said, we're all on the same side---us, and our OCS kids.
The grudge was just an option, not a sure thing. And yes, understood that the message being delivered is intended to help, regardless of the volume. I had read about the voice thing. One of the first indications in our reading that this is serious business. Intense, stressful ect can mean various things. But "everyone likely to lose voice" sort of spells it out.
Hey Bill, have you seen your guy since he has been in Newport or will graduation be the first time? I am guessing nothing in the first month or so, but we live 4 hours away and could get up there if they ever get a minute.
I wish we could get up there sooner, but we are a bit out of range down here in S.E. LA. We'll be content to attend the graduation ceremony / festivities.
MG,
No, I haven't seen my son since he left 9 weeks ago and don't expect to see him until graduation. He hasn't gotten any liberty yet, although he might this weekend. I don't think they are allowed off base or to have visitors in the first 8-9 weeks. Starting around week 6 he began to get a little free time on the weekends for making calls, writing email, etc., but nothing you could schedule a visit around.
Ok, got it Bill. Trying to manage his mother's expectations (ok, mine too). It's going to be a looooong time until Thanksgiving. And Mike, yes I can see where S.E. LA is a bit out of the way, but as Bill has pointed out, we are in the same boat regardless of location. Ted has an aunt an hour down the road, and I guess that won't do him any good either. I went NROTC, not nearly this scary.
It is frustrating, because they have little time or opportunity to call, write, or later on, email. You will go days and perhaps a couple weeks without hearing anything.
All I can recommend is to write frequently. It will make you feel better and they really appreciate the support.
Does anyone have the email address "template" for our LOs at OCS? I saw it somewhere but cannot remember where. It was the OCS / Navy generic email address; all you had to do was drop in your Candidate's name. Thanks.
VERY limited communication until they can use cellphones around week 10. Until then, he will be able to call a few minutes a week, usually on Sunday afternoon. Unless phone privileges are extended or withdrawn. Just be patient.
As Mike says, very limited at the beginning. You get one call on the day they start, but they are just passing on mailing info etc, and can't really talk much. Try to use "no news is good news" theory and write them often. Even though they have very little time to respond, just getting something at mail call is a big boost. Good luck.
I think rule of thumb at the start is for mail to be letter sized and not obviously containing a lot of stuff. The mail that is likely to be opened are the ones which could possibly contain contraband. We tried to stick to a letter, with maybe a couple of newspaper clippings and nothing got opened, or if they did, no issue. We did have one case where a phone card went missing, but that was PO stuff, not DI stuff. If we had a lot to send, we split up so as not to send big bulky envelopes which would draw attention.
I just saw that your son is in class 09-11. My daughter, Kristin Greene is also in that class. I'd be interested to hear anything you know about what they are doing and if you'll be at the grad ceremony on 4/22/11. My wife, 6 yr old grandson and I will fly into Boston on the 20th and look forward to the events. My only experience with Newport was running the Ocean State Marathon ther twice in 1982 and 1984. Kris was 2 yrs old on the last one and I was 43. It seems like yesterday. I'll probably be the oldest parent at the graduation but still very proud of my kids. My son ,Adam, based at the amphibious base in Little Creek, VA may be able to attend if not deployed before. He's an E-6 IT1 (recent rating change from QM2) in the Riverine Squadrons. It ought to be a great chance to see his sister get her O-1. I'm sure he'll get some ribbing for that; but he'll be proud of her.
My daughter, Kristin, is in 09-11 Charlie company. I believe they just got the streamer for the drill competition and they are so proud that they will be flying it on their Guidon in the ceremonies. I understand their DI who is USMC wears a smile now after many weeks of scowling at them to get them in shape. Hope to see you in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm sending an excerpt from my daughter's email confirming your son, Jeff, is in her class. You can see she thinks pretty highly of him and suspects you are not aware of all his credits. Hope this makes your day.
Charlie and Delta merged a week ago when we became Candidate Officers, we are all just Class 09-11. But yeah, Jesse Miller has been in Charlie with me and there is another Miller from Delta. Jesse Miller has been an outstanding candidate. He had one of the top billets (Charlie Adjutant) when we were officer candidates and he still managed to excel in physical fitness, academics, and military training, earning him the "snowflake award" which is very rare as I understand it. Now he is Regimental Commander and if he had any more bars on his collar, well... he'd need a much bigger collar. Probably Jesse doesn't like to brag about these things so his dad might not know... but he can be very proud of his son. Anyway even though I have nothing but good things to say about him... I still feel kind of dirty talking behind another candidate's back. He may not want this stuff publicized.

Tim, It was great meeting you and your family @ OCS grad. Best of luck to Jesse in Pensacola.
Just a word of advice to any parents coming to the next grad class at Newport. Plan your flights to arrive well BEFORE sunset. We did, but because of cancelled flights in our itinerary we didn't arrive until late after dark and the FOG on the coast and one-way streets of Newport made it very difficult to navigate to our hotel...and this is from a guy who's piloted a small aircraft on instruments from Beverly, MA to New Mexico without missing a checkpoint on the way. Fog has a way of disorienting even the best of drivers.
Kristin is still in Newport starting the SWOS (surface warfare) and then will report to Dam Neck, VA for COMM/Crypto liaison school and reports to her ship sometime later.
Hi all,
My son, Aaron, is starting ocs in August. I thought I had seen a forum long ago that would give info during and about the individual class. Is Alzheimer's setting in or is there such a thing?
Son came in on BDCP for Inteligence. Any suggestions for him or us for his upcoming class? Thank you in advance.
My son just graduated this last friday from OCS class 02-12, honor class. Was a wonderful experience at the graduation, went and ate at the chowhall with our son the morning of graduation, was too cold out to see them get destroyed by their Gunny lol.. but the slideshow at graduation was fun to see. Meeting the staff was a proud moment for me allowing me an opportunity to thank them for their hard work molding our young Naval Ensigns. Watching my sons first salute was a wonderful moment, i only wish my father had been alive to give it to share this with him, a real decorated hero. Those who have sons and daughters there, dont worry about them, they are in great and caring hands, and they will come out changed men and women that you can be unbelievably proud of. Go Navy.
Thank you Ganavydad. Wow your must be very proud of your 2 sons. Im glad to hear they are doing so well. I wrote to my son yesterday and again today so when he can finally write he will have many letters to read. Thanks for the advice about the sports clippings. I will def do that. I will check on facebook as well. Thank you for your advice. Its just hard not being able to talk to him and encouraging him.
Thanks! As soon as i hear something I will let you guys know. I know he has some phone cards and stamps with him but he might not have access to them yet so i will attach one in the letter i send him. Very sweet of your son to keep you letters.
Yes I got a email today from him saying they were setting up his email account and also a letter. He said he has to get his wisdom teeth removed in week 9. Things are a little better, but its still very stressfull. Hes also lost his voice due to the yelling. He doesnt know when he will be able to call but will write us soon. So good to hear from him. I think ive read the letter over a million times. Thanks for asking. how are your boys doing?
