Our son is in the 02 17 E class of ocs. Any other parents have sons, daughters in this class?
  • Tim Bates

My daughter in law is in 02-17

  • Joe Parsons

Hi Tim Bates. You are the first here that I found who has someone in  the 02-17 OCS class. If i count correctly, their graduation date should be 11/11.

  • Tim Bates

Yeah, I have 4 immediate family in the Navy. Two went thru ODS last year I have been to Newport a lot for Grad. The new pictures of the 02-17 have just been posted on their Facebook page. They usually post on mondays. The grad date could be affected since it is a holiday. it could be on Thursday

  • Joe Parsons

Thanks for the info. Tim. Found the pictures. hope we find out soon regarding the grad date to zero in on arrangements.

  • Michael Perry

My daughter just started OCS class 07-17 H ;  she will be getting a short break over the holiday; she will be staying on base. can she call or wright during the first 30 days?  Do they let them wear gloves or hats when the wind chill is 25 below?  If she makes graduation can my wife and I attend?  I hope I am asking these questions in the right place . If not I'm sure someone will tell me.  Thanks for any help.  Mike Perry

  • Tim Bates

Mike the weather dictates the clothing. If she has down time for a holiday, she should be able to communicate with you. Candidates can invite guests to graduation. There is a pre-grad party the day before at the O club. All these details will be relayed to you later. Congrats on your daughter being selected. Usually, no news is good at this point.

  • Karen Brinser

Hi Mike, congrats to your daughter. My daughter just graduated from OCS Dec 2 class 03-17G. Yes they can write but they are so busy they don't have much time to write. However, my daughter told me how much she appreciated letters from us. If you have not yet done so read the above link on this site for Survivors guide to Navy OCS. It is pretty accurate for what they are going through. One of things that also help me from a parents stand point was the closed group in Facebook that one of the parents started. It really helped me a lot sharing information and worries with some of the parents of the candidates. Also on Facebook on The Officer Training Command Facebook Newport page they post pictures almost every week of your daughters class as they progress through their training. They have a pre graduation ceremony the night before called Hi Moms which was very nice and yes you and your wife attend. It was lovely. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps and go luck to your daughter.

you do see this direct page to links right Karen?

  • Karen Brinser

Thanks Paul for posting the links.

not a problem---I've had that up there for a few months now in the hopes of making it easier for all to access those photos.

  • JOSEPH HICKEY

My O/C tells me the entire class 16-17 passed their RLP!

Also that classes will be 10 weeks after his.

They are getting the new Type III uniforms.

  • Bart Broadman

Joseph -- Thanks for sharing that -- my son is also in 16-17.  We live abroad so he wasn't able to call us (he dropped us a short email).  So any updates from other class 16-17 parents are much appreciated.

One question -- what does it mean when you say "Classes will be 10 weeks after his?"

    Thanks.

  • JOSEPH HICKEY

Bart- According to my son, all future OCS classes will be 10 weeks long, not 12. Hear anything about PIR date?

  • Bart Broadman

Got it, thanks.  I haven't heard anything on the PIR date yet, but will post here if i do.  I am keen to find out as organizing a Singapore to Newport trip is going to take a bit of work.  But wouldn't miss it for anything!

  • Bob Kenyon

My son is in class 14-17.  I have read that they don't have PIR anymore.  We haven't heard anything for his class either.  Fingers crossed that they do have it.  Our candidates work so hard, would love to see it.  Congrats on everyone passing RLP!

  • Bart Broadman

I received a one liner from my son saying class 16-17 graduation is sep 14/15.

Anybody been to an OCS graduation before able to tell me the rough agenda?  When it is good to arrive and depart?  thanks

  • Tim Bates

    Bart,

i have been to 2 of these graduations a couple years ago. Generally, there is a party/celebration at the Officers club in the afternoon for the graduating class. The usually happens on a Thursday. The dress is business casual and some food and drink are available. The next day, normally a Friday the graduation ceremony takes place either on the drill field or the drill hall. Lots of Navy tradition here. Band plays, guest speaker, etc. Afterwards, the officers are usually free for dinner or travel and move their stuff out of the barracks.

  • Bart Broadman

Thanks for the info -- much appreciated.  and really looking forward to it.

  • Bob Kenyon

Just attended our sons commission, class 14-17. It's like what Tim said. The Hi Moms reception was 5:30-830 at the Officers Club. We were asked to come early in the afternoon to help move out as much as possible. Graduation was at 10/30 the next morning. We had to arrive early to pick up the rest of our sons thing so that he was out before graduation. We live in NY so we only spent Thursday night. We regretted not staying an extra night to see more of Newport. Best wishes for your son.
  • Bart Broadman

    Thanks and congratulations Bob

  • Bob Kenyon

Hi Bart. Yes, you can take pictures/videos during part of the graduation. They will tell you when it is allowed. If I remember correctly, no cameras allowed during The National Anthem or Navy and Marine Anthems.

What is the class designation/number/address for the class that began last Dec. (2018) at OCS Newport RI?

  • Greg Ilkka

    Peter Adam - Mailing address:

    Officer Candidate School

    Class ##-##

    OFFICER TRAINING COMMAND NEWPORT

    1356 Meyerkord Avenue

    Newport, RI 02841-1641

From the OTC Newport Facebook page it looks like the class number would be either 06-19 or 07-19. 08-19 just reported a week ago. Good luck!

  • Peter S. Adam

My son recently graduated from OCS Newport RI.  He's now in San Diego advanced training.  I'm planning on going out there to see him.  Any ideas about a decent hotel/motel.  Clean/budget priced.  Located near downtown.  Thanks Peter ADAM

  • Chris B.

Navy Lodge North Island is fantastic.  One the beach and across the street from the runway (not noisy IRRC).  Should be very reasonable.  Your son should be able to book you a room.  I just looked at their website-- $131 plus tax.

  • Peter S. Adam

Thank you so much, Chris.  Appreciate your input.  All best,  Peter ADAM

Hello everyone! A dad posed this question tonight, and if anyone can give us any insight, we would appreciate it.

"My son will be attending OCS. Does he arrange his own flight to Newport, and get reimbursed?"

  • Bart Broadman

Joseph -- When my son went (two years ago) he arranged his own flights and got reimbursed later.  But as I recall he was reimbursed a standard rate (from his home base to Newport) irrespective of his actual spend.  I believe he was able to find out that amount ahead of time by talking to his recruiting office.  These things change though so I hope I have not given you outdated info.

  • SouthMSDad

    Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a group for OCS dads for the class beginning on 12/15/19?

    thanks,

    jim

  • Shannon W

    @southMSDad,
    Aloha!
I do not know of a specific group, but I do know there are many Facebook groups for the OCS classes. You are welcome to join an earlier class to gain information, then search for your specific class by class number to join. ex:  "

Navy OCS class 02-20 friends & family"

     https://www.facebook.com/groups/523824928361284/
Best wishes to your candidate and remember to write letters every day on INDOC and if they get rolled to "H CLASS"! Mail call is the highlight of every evening.
    Regards,

    SWO's HOOYAH!

  • Mike Sobolewski

Anyone know if they have started or will be starting the Hi Moms dinner again the night before graduation at OCS? looking to book flights and wondering if I should plan to get there in time for it.

  • Andy Moore

Negative on the hi moms as of 01Apr2022.   Had meet-up time from 10am-1300 then 1400 graduation on Friday.   Thats it.

  • Mark E Mangus

At this point, the question is how many guests are allowed. There are two venues right now that can be used for the graduation. One will allow for only 2 guests and the other, 3. ALL ATTENDEES MUST BE VACCINATED. That means young children cannot attend...as of today 4/17/22.

Make hotel reservations soon. Hotels up there going to run you $350 a night and up. I just made reservations through T-Mobile Travel at the Homewood Suites for $345 plus tax/night.

  • J Gault

I wonder when the last "hi moms" took place.

  • Mark E Mangus

We just learned they will be allowed 4 guests for the June 3 graduation. Still no children due to the vaccination rules.

  • Mike Sobolewski

Thanks for the time for graduation, I was thinking it was in the morning. There will only be 2 of us so number of guests is not an issue. We have accomodations. Guess I just need to make dinner reservations for graduation night

  • Mark E Mangus

Which class is your son in? 10-22 or 11-22?

  • Mike Sobolewski

I don't think he has a number yet? He will be flying on July 1, starting July 2
