Hello. My name is Randy. I have just joined Navy Dads. My oldest son has been in the Navy for a few years but is about to deploy for several months. I decided to join to help keep up to date on any news and events going on.

  • Randy

Hi David. I'm just getting started on Navy Dads. My son is joining the USS Paul Hamilton DDG 60 soon. Are you still envolved with the DDG 60?

David. Thanks for the reply. My son will be joining the DDG 60 soon. Are you active duty or is the profile picture a picture of your son? And since this is September 11, it seems like a special day to says thanks for your service so, THANK YOU.

  • David Smith

That is my graduation picture. My wife and I were both Marines. Never figured that our son would join the military, but he joined the Navy at 23 and we are very proud of him. It is a special day for all our service people today, and thank you for your comment, and thanks for your familys service.

Our last fishing trip, while he was in San Diego. I caught more fish than him that day :)

    Hi Keith

    Welcome.

Nice to see more people in the group.

  • David Smith

Has anyone tried to ship a laptop computer to a sailor? We have been unsuccessful so far trying to ship it via USPS, Fedex, or UPS.

  • Randy

    Hi Keith
Sorry, I've never tried to ship a laptop.

  • Randy

Sounds like they had a nice long port visit.

  • Randy

Communications with the ship may be a bit inconsistent over the coming days. Email messages will be spotty, and internet/phones will down for the crew.  All is well, there is no need for any additional worry.  If anything urgent arises and you need to be in touch with your Sailor, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi guys I'm new here. My son is on his 1st deployment aboard the PH. His is learning a lot and loves his rate. We got to Skype with our son twice on Wed. So good to see his face. We pray things don't escalate in Koren so our sailors stay safe and on schedule.

  • James D

Morning everyone I need your help. We will be visiting your son soon when his ship gets in from deployment.

This trip is going to be expensive so we're looking for way to cut expenses.

I heard it's cheaper to rent a not so new (1-3 years old) car from small local rental places instead of the big name agencies.

I've also heard that food is a major expense. We will be staying somewhere we can cook so we plan on buying grocieries.

I heard there is a Sam's Club near Pearl but we may not need to buy in such bulk. A friend who was been to Hawaii many times suggested buying food here and checking it as luggage.

That what they did and he said the cost to ship is worth the savings on food. They packed steaks, shrimp etc. in dry ice in an ice chest. He said you'll spend several hundred dollar per week otherwise just to eat.

He also said do and go to the non-tourist things to save money yet have a great experience.

I would appreciate any input you guys have from your trips or anyone who lives there and knows better. Thanks!

  • David Smith

Welcome James. Our son is on his 2nd deployment with the ship. We have not been to Pearl, so I can't help you with any of your questions. Hope you guys are able to get your answers and have a great time!

  • James D

Thanks David. What rate is your son? My son is a CTT.

  • Randy

    Hi James

Sorry, I've never been there so can't make any suggestions on cutting costs. I would like to be there when they get back, but it looks like I'm not going to be able to make it.

I got a Skype call today too. It was so nice to to get to visit for a while. You just have to love Skype.

The threats from Korea have me very concerned too. I hope it calms down.

  • David Smith

My son is a GSM James.

  • Randy

He's a shellback now. That sounds like a fun ceremony.

  • David Smith

Lol, yea Randy. I think the have a pretty good time with that ceremony. Dustin did his in 2011 and then got to participate in this one as a shellback. The shellback probably have a lot more fun than the polliwogs. At least they only have to go through it once.
