We just received our first letter from our son. Looks like they are getting up at 0430 and doing motivational PT before the other divisions get up. Said he went without sleep for the first 45 hours he was there before going to his compartment (division). He seems to like everything but inspections...they need to be sure that everything is perfect, right down to how they fold their "skivies" and they must stand at attention for 3 hours during the inspection...of everything. His poor buddy that he went into the same rating with has had to have his wisdom teeth out and has been SIQ for a few days. Sunday is writing day for them and our letter was postmarked 4 days ago. If not for the holiday, we would have received it yesterday, so Wednesday - Thursday is when we believe we will see any letters from him each week. He said that the routine on Sunday allows them 6 hours to write, clean, organize, iron, etc. Good luck all and I hope you're reading your son's letters this week as well!
I am new to the group. My son was supposed to report with class 287 but has broken a bone in his foot and has been rolled back to class 288 is there a group set up for 288.
trooper dad, no one has started a group of 288. The last group started was 286. If you decide to start a group I would suggest to make it priviate. Let me know so I can send anyone look for that group your direction.
Hey G273 -- Just found out yesterday my youngest tested-out of preBUD/S and will report to Coronado in early Jan for Class 287 Indoc. It'll be a great Christmas -- we'll have my youngest AND my oldest (from SEAL Team 2) both home for the holidays!!
Troopers Dad -- my youngest and your son probably know each other from preBUD/S. Let's connect!
Jerry, that is Great News. I know you will enjoy having him home. Haven't hear anything from GS, I am sure they are probably busy. Other than knowing he is OK and maybe hearing his voice, I don't think I want to know more that.
Thanksgiving was hard for me,especially when Fox Sport were to a undisclosed location where troops go when the get overseas. I am Proud of Fox Sports setting up a place so some of the guys can have a Thanksgiving meal and watch football, it is close to like being home. Getting ready for the Navy/Army game (I don't like the phrase Army/Navy).
Please thank you SEAL for his Service for me and your 287 for what he has done and to keep up the good work. My family and I are keeping both in our Thoughts and Hearts.
I've checked the settings Jim between this group (since I'm a member) and the PIR group (since I created it) and the settings are the same. RSS is unselected in both so I'm kinda at a loss as to the difference in behavior.
To all the Navy dads, I'm new at this and my son Jr has been away for 4 days and it's been a very long 4 day Jr and I were close I miss the kid a lot. I have been spending a lot of time on Navy dads the site help a lot.
Sr, we have all been there and know what you are feeling. I talked with lots of people here and on other sites, to get question answered about what was going on and when I would hear more from my GS. Now I am back in the same boat. GS is deployed, don't know where in this world he is, although I think I know the area he is in, but does not help much. This was the first Thanksgiving my family has been through that we could not get in a car, plane, on computer or phone and text a member of the family. The PM feature is great to talk with others and not have feeling broadcast or OPSEC rules to contend with. We sometimes exchange email address to be more private (considering nothing is private anymore).
Hang in there and contact us if we can help or you need someone to listen to your thoughts.
SR, my son started last week as well. I'm still waiting to hear what division he is (sounds like the SOs are in 800 divisions) and when they stand it up. looking for the box to arrive as well - hoping it has some more info in it. But - no news is good news at this point.
Well the box arrived today and the only thing I learned is that he has navy tube socks (from the empty wrapper he put in the box). Looks like we won't know his division and his address until he writes.
Tony -- Thanks for sharing. My oldest son started preBUD/S in Jan 2009 (I believe he was in the seventh Class). A lot has changed/improved over the past couple of years. Ironically, I picked-up my youngest son from Great Lakes JUST THIS MORNING (he's completed his preBUD/S Class and reports for BUD/S Jan 5)!
Hey 273 -- My oldest arrives home Sun. A very Merry Christmas to be sure!
Merry Christmas, guys! It's great to have them home, even as fleeting as it is. Managed a brief shopping trip today w/ our guy & his mom is most jealous that we excluded her[altho she's the beneficiary].
On a side note, I am rather surprised @ some of the posts on the N4M site for this class.
Again, Merry Christmas & enjoy your sons. Best Christmas ever!
My son Jr is really having second though's about going in the seals not because of the physical part but he's being told by other seal instructor that he would not see or here much from his family, I called the recruiter he told me that he would be able to see or here from his family or love ones there may be times when he's away but for the most part there just playing mind games to weed out the weak. this was Jr's dream is there anything I can say to Jr to encourage him. I sent him a letter and asked him to think about his decision and I told him that I loved him very much and I would respect his decision and I'm very proud of him
Sr, I would tell him what I have told my son...if it's his dream the only one who can take it from him is himself. Head games abound in every stage of the process, but family is what keeps them "grounded". They are going for the Achilles heel to weed out those who can't come to terms with missing their family - a MAJOR distraction from their task of making them warriors. Ask him how he would feel later if he dropped without giving it his best effort. The bonds he forms with the guys he will be training with will be every bit as strong as those he has with your family and will last forever. Just as your family will always be there for him, so will they!
Horseshoe, very well said and I agree with you 100%. My GS has 2 families, in fact several of my family members now have 2 families. Our Navy family is important to us and our bio-family is also important. I think the guys understand maybe more than we think how important his bio-family is and it will be stronger in the future but their Navy family will be very important as they will give they strength in other ways. I know my new Navy family has really helped me and I can only hope I have helped and been there for them. How lucky and rewarding is it for me to have 2 very close families, a job and still have time to enjoy all the rewards I get from the 3. If anything I think the training helped our family become tighter, introduced us to a world of new things and a family that can answer question, be there for you when others don't understand and where else can you meet so many people for so many backgrounds, so many locations and know you can call on any of them for help with your concerns, question and can share your joy on subjects that most of our friend do not understand. Sr I agree that the mind games, distraction and other things they throw at the guys are to find out now who really wants this instead of waiting till they are in a life or death situation or they have spend millions of our dollars to train someone and then have them drop. Look at 2 things, first the Navy want more Special Ops guys and second look at how many guys start this training and how many graduate. My GS started BUDS with 170+ and the graduating class was 49, of that number only 9 was from the original class, all the other were from other classes that had been rolled due to injury or performance from earlier class. The majority of the guys that started are in the Navy and are now doing a different job.
Sr explain to him how hard life can be and only school and training will make it easier, this goes for everything in life and every job (Navy, car salesman, Doctor, school teacher). What does he want to do for the rest of this life, or at least thinks the wants to do. I don't know what your first job was or what you do now but most people go through many different job before finding that job they really enjoy. I remember in grade school I was going to be a policeman or fireman when I grew up, high school I wanted to be a translator in the UN, after school I was in retail for 20 years, they fast food. and for the last 27 year I have been working for a company that services office equipment and could kick myself for not starting this type of work earlier. Tell things change and his wants and need may change, or possibly he will be luck and start off with what he ends up doing for the rest of his life.
Sr. There are things, places and information that your son won't be able to share with you. He mustn't, and you shouldn't know about them. That said, he will be your son. He will be different, but this is what growing up is about. Some will find this hard, and it might feel like separation. We all grow apart; relationships change, but this change can be for the better, especially when it is based on achievement.
Besides, what young man isn't looking for the chance to answer, when you ask, "What did you do today?" "Can't tell you."
Hey G273! Yes - both my sons now flash the same smile. We had a very nice Skype session with my youngest from Coronado last night (almost 2 hours - he's the Great Communicator of the family). He's doing well and getting ready for BUD/S Orientation (formerly known as Indoc) starting Mon. My oldest based on the E Coast is training somewhere in TN now and he's communicated with his younger brother that he's well and still Living The Dream (my wife and I have only rec'd a couple of short texts from him since Christmas - which is much more his minimalist style). Hope you're well. Take care, Jerry
Jerry, was listening to News Radio here is Dallas yesterday and they had audio for a Green Bay reported trying to enter a Sports Bar in Chicago. They told he she was not allowed in wearing GD Jersey and she ask if they would call the cops. She was told Yes, they would complain that she was trespassing and try to cause a riot. It brought back memories of the Ice Bowl.
G273, yes - it is a little crazy around here these days. Despite the temps (near 0 with wind chill -15 or so), there was a Packers Pep Rally just a few blocks from my office yesterday afternoon (downtown Green Bay). I'm a big fan, and have enjoyed many very cold victories at Lambeau Field myself, but prefer to do my cheering in front of my own fireplace these days. Despite the Cowboys' season - I hope you enjoy the games tomorrow.
I am going to enjoy the games this year. I could really care less who wins, this year I can enjoy the Great Plays and not be upset that my team was not the one that made it.
The winner will be the team that want to be in a in-closed stadium and in warmer weather the most.
I have the ribs, salad, beans and other munches all read for the start of the game and 2 laptop set up by the TV so I can keep up with everything.
