BUD/S is divided into 3 Phases, each taking about 2 months.  So figure about 6 months total for BUD/S (barring injury).

  • dca

L Dave T .BUDS consists of three phases. each phase is 6 to 8 weeks depending on phase and holidays, also before starting phase 1 your son should have about two weeks of In-doc. You can also go to seal swcc.com and see videos of the things your son will be doing when he gets there. good luck to your son

L Dave T --Suggest you read "The Warrior Elite" by Dick Couch, a retired Navy Captain and former Seal.  It is a bit dated (The two weeks of Indoc have been replaced with 3 weeks of Orientation, referred to now as BO) but an excellent insight into what's on the horizon for your son. --It's a real eye opener.

  • L Dave T

Thanks for the info gents & the luck; and, I will go buy the book. As a Sat guy didn't foray into the snakeaters relm much - my old chief was UDT - his fault, initally got me into this mess. Too many cold beers - and yes he too was also Irish. Headed for PIR 14Oct - thanks again for all the help/info.

  • Jackct

    L Dave T,

Best of luck to you & your son. it's quite a ride! You can Google "Navy SEALs Bud/s" & a lot of info pops up. Keep us up to date:

L Dave T- The information given is correct. But if his PIR is 10/14 then he will first report to pre-BUDS in GL. This is where the BUD/s class will be formed. They will go to classes and get conditioning. The timeline is anyones guess. It can vary from 4 -10 weeks. But since there are not winter BUD/s then he may be there for a while. At the end of prebuds they all must pass the minimal qualifing tests/time to advance to BO (BUD/s orientation- yes it is 3 weeks) This is in Coronado. They get more conditioning & safety training & its considerably harder than Pre-BUD/s. At the end of BO; they test again and the weeding continues. They only take a certain # of guys into BUD/s phase 1 & this portion is about 7 weeks.  If the guy makes it then he will move into phase 2, etc...Definately Warrior Elite should be in your personal library if you have a son entering this quest. There are many other books as well that touch on the training too.

  • L Dave T

I really appreciate the info GP; bought the book last night.

HooYah BUDS Class 292. Is everyone ready for a bumpy ride?

John and John glad to have you here. My Grandson graduated 273.

Looking forward to following 292 and hearing how your guys are doing.
  • RyeJim

Hey Grandpa, are families still invited to BUD/S graduations or are festivities limited now to just SQT?

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

BUDS Graduation is closed to everyone but the guys. In fact I heard that will be no more BUDS Graduation, just a short meeting of the guys and instructors on the beach then on to SQT. SQT Graduation is the one you want to go to it is Great. I have a Blog on http://www.navydads.com/profiles/blogs/sqt-graduation-trip you might like to read.

  • RyeJim

Thanks for the info Grandpa.  I figured you'd know.  One more question: Are they assigned to a team during SQT or after they win their trident?

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

The should know just before graduation. My GS graduated on Friday and left SD for the East Coast on Tuesday. He drove his wife and dogs out and the Navy moved their stuff.
  • RyeJim

Thanks again Grandpa.  Considering we're just starting First Phase, that's a long way down the road!!  We'll take it one day at a time.

  • Jackct

My best wishes for your sons & you as you enter an extraordinary experience. As Grandpa stated, you're in for a bumpy ride!!! encourage your guy to do it ONE  EVOLUTION AT A TIME. Hour to hour , beat down to beat down... .

Feel free to contact me if u wish,  Jack

  • RyeJim

Does anybody know if a celebration of any kind is planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Seals (January, 1962)?

  • kurt

    how long is pre buds

  • RyeJim

Kurt: I believe Pre Buds is typically anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks in duration or as long as it takes to form up and prepare a BUD/S class.

  • L Dave T

Kurt; Our son is currently in Pre-Buds & he has informed us that BUDS Class 293 will depart on 14Dec for Christmas leave enroute to Cal.

  • Russell

We heard the same (12/14/11) depart from our son.  He wasn't sure of the start date in CA, but seems like a decent break.  They'll need to keep the fitness level up - run & run & run some more.

    HooYah to Class 293.

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

Guys, please do not post date and where they are going on a public site. You may want to read OPSEC again.

Thank You and HooYah Class 293!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Ken283

    Hey Grandpa     How ya been?

  • Ken283

Grandpa is correct about OPSEC.   The SEAL trainers and command in sd are VERY concerned about movement and dates being mentioned.  they are very concerned about security of your boys.

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

Ken, How is your guy? I hear is is going to get cold in the Northeast, stay warm.
  • John Chalus

There will be a ceremony at the UDT SEAL MUSEUM in Fort Pierce Florida over the Veterans Day Holiday to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the commissioning of SEAL Team ONE and TWO. I am sure that at the EAST and WEST coast reunions this year and next there will also be celebrations.

  • RyeJim

Thanks John.  I appreciate the info..... as well as you and your family's comittment.

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

Paul, that is a good one. First time I have heard that one.

  • Jim (SO Dad)

That is great Paul. I used that one and also "Sons of UDT" on a DVD I made for the family of his BUDs journey...

  • L Dave T

Love the cadence clip Paul; sounds like every morning @ Dive School only meaner w/snake eater breath.

  • Midwest dad

Any graduation gift ideas for those who have men about to get their Trident or ones that have gone thru graduation already???

  • Jeff

If I could find a new oar which is authentic, I was thinking about having it inscribed as one gift.

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

  • Jeff

    That's pretty impressive!

  • RyeJim

A thought I had some time ago, when our time comes, is a gift of an enscribed ship's bell with the clapper removed.  I think I might like the idea of the oar better  --it's cheaper!!

  • Jeff

On a different note, the Chicago Tribune has an interesting article titled, "Keeping fifth domain of warfare safe" and deals with cyber security.

  • montanadad2

    Where is final graduation held?

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

montanadad2, Graduation is held on the Grinder. They will set up tents to keep the sun, rain or what every from you.

  • montanadad2

So when its Trident time its back to the big island?

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

montanadad2, after BUDS they start SQT Training. At the end of SQT they Graduate and received their Trident and have about a week to report to their Teams. I have a Blog regarding SQT Graduation and them recieving their Trident you might enjoy reading.

  • montanadad2

Do all the guys that secure Hellweek get to move to the next phase.  Or can you go thru that and still be dropped on Monday?

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

They can be dropped or rolled back all the way through. Usually rolled for performance but mostly due to injury. Phase I combo of drop and roll then as they go on it is mostly roll. There are a few more weeks after HW then to the Pool. Most I have talked with would rather do HW again instead of Pool Comp in Phase II.

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Calvin

A week and a long day. I’m hoping each of you are currently in the process of preparing mentally and physically this week for coping with the start of that very long day. Catch up on your sleep and wrap your mind around what is about to happen. Although it was 18+ Classes ago it is still fresh in our memory and we have referred back to it several times as training continued through the next Phases and SQT.

Guys, this is one of the major Milestones. I though I might give you some of my thoughts on what will be happening. This will be the 292st time young men have encountered this week of challenge and I am sure each of the guys and their Loved Ones experienced the same feelings you’ll face. For whatever reason some of the guys won’t make it through this week. I know some who didn’t make it through the first few hours. The good side is that I’ve never heard of any Loved One who didn’t survive the week. Everyone will move forward, some will be taking another path in the Navy, some may be rolled back, and some will finish; but each of you will be there at the end to cheer them into the next phase of Navy life. There are some things I will not post on a public site but have no problem talking about in private, so please feel free to PM me if you have questions or just want to talk. Each of you should be very proud of what your guy has accomplished to date, and regardless of how this week turns out, he has done what very few have even tried. My Family and I feel that each guy in class is a winner even if they do not make it to the end. I wouldn’t have attempted that path 47 years ago regardless of my fitness or background. This is something that many dream of but very few accomplish. As we went through “Hell Week” I kept telling myself “No news is good news.” Then I’d remember “The Only Easy Day was Yesterday”. Those two thoughts are a rollercoaster of emotions and you will experience every single one. When this is over and you are talking with your guy listen for, and if you are there, watch the way he tells about his experience. He will be proud, smiling, and tell you that it wasn’t that hard. As the weeks good by and you hear about what is going on ask your guy if the week was as hard as HW. My GS has told me he would rather go through HW again than some of the weeks that are ahead of them. Guys, please remember that everything happens for a reason. Be Proud of your guy and encourage him regardless of this week’s outcome. Be his support and listen. Always tell him how proud you are of his life accomplishments and to look toward the future. It too brings reward and pride. (If he decides to drop accept that decision. He will have time to make a decision on his next step. LISTEN and SUPPORT. Life isn’t ending.)

Keep your feelings and everything you learn next week with you at all times. It will not be the last time you’ll have this experience. Remember, this is the middle of Phase I. You must still face Phase II, Phase III, and SQT before you reach the goal. (And yes, there are those who drop or are rolled through all of the additional training.) We are a Family, a very big Family and we should stay in touch with each other. I know I want to know how your guys are doing, the good times and the not so good. I may have been there or it might help me in the future.

The time is near, soon the Starting Gun will be fired. The timing will be a surprise to those starting their journey. For those who live in or are visiting Coronado they will be surprised but they will know not to call 911 it’s just the Navy. While the guys are prepared and expecting this they will loose their breath and sense of direction from the noise. Everyone hold on tight we are in for a bumpy ride.
HooYah Class 292, be strong, be safe give them ****.

    “HOO YAH 292!!!!!!!”
  • RyeJim

Nice message grandpa.  It helps to know there are people as supportive as you who have been here before.

  • Dan

Amen to Grandpa comment about things happening for a reason.  My son was dropped from 289 Tuesday afternoon of hellweek.  After a couple of weeks of us all questioning God he was assigned to a ship in Little Creek.  After four days of driving home he arrived very sick.  Turned out he had a ruptured appendix.  God got him home just in time.  He's now doing his time on the ship and trying to get in shape for another try at BUD/S.  We have all grown in our faith from the experience.
