Welcome Aboard!
My name is E.G. and I have three sons and a beautiful daughter. I also have the most amazing wife, Cindy. Our oldest son "Evan" served as an ABE aboard the USS Ronald Reagan in San Diego, Ca and my family and I couldn't have been prouder.
My Navy Dads journey began when my son enlisted in April, 2008. I started building NavyDads.Com while he was still a recruit at RTC in Great lakes. I designed, built, and launched NavyDads.com June 18, 2008, two days before his Navy graduation.
My hope is that this site will help Navy Families find answers to questions, share concerns, help another along, and lastly, a place to show their pride for their Sailor.

What Were Your Feelings When Your Sailor Joined The Navy:
Thank you for the warm welcome, and especially for creating this great resource for new Navy parents. I'm already aware of the blessing it is and can be, and I'm looking forward to both receiving and giving as we progress through our son's career. Fair winds and following seas.
Thanks a lot for the info on hotels near RTC. I'll check them out and make a reservation soon. Let me know if you know anything to do with my sailor while I'm there. I'm sure we won't have very much time to spend together and it will go by fast. I booked my flight back for Sunday at 8 PM so I don;t know what I'm gonna do for an extra day there.
Thanks to all for the warm welcome. My son has recently enlisted in the navy and he just signed his NSW contract yesterday. We are so pound of what he is doing and want to be able to support him the best way possible. He will ship off to boot camp October 1st and will be training in preparation for BUDS until then. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for creating this site. It is an absolutely wonderful experience to read about the different stories, get information, ask questions etc. The people are wonderful
Thank you for the welcome wishes. Like Ernie's son my son is in the DEP program. Unlike Ernie's son he has received mixed information that is delaying his getting a NSW contract. Namely he had PRK surgery at the beginning of March, which his recruiter knew about but failed to inform him that he would have to wait six months before he could take his PST...and then wait some additional time to go to Great Lakes. One would think that this information would be clearly established. He has no restrictions from a medical point of view but until the six month passes he cannot even train with the mentor. I could understand with Lasik surgery but PRK is infinitely less invasive. Had we known this, we would have pushed for the PRK surgery last summer and been done with it. Heads up to other prospective candidates.
Larry, my son graduates 28 June as well. Based on the info pamphlet that we received with the form letter, we found rooms at the Waukegan Ramada. Now obviously we haven't stayed there yet but it was on the Navy's list. When we told them it was for PIR, we received a special rate of $74.00 per night. I looked it up online and it looks decent.
"Elmo Moore Thank you very much for this site! It's so wonderful to be here. Almost all of my questions are answered here. Everyday I learned a lot. Gerry"
Diane, my prayers are likewise with your son that he stays healthy and runs into no more adversity. He will emerge a stronger sailor and even more determined to succeed!
Chris, absolutely! The anticipation leading up to it and then the moment it went up will be an event indelibly etched into my memory! My son's division was the third of eleven to march in and we spotted him as he crossed the threshold. It was at that moment I could not hold back.... the "liquid pride" flowed! When it comes to my son, it was the second best event in my life....second only to witnessing his birth! Wow am I proud of him and love him like I didn't know I was capable!!
Nathan, the second page of the form letter should be two sided. The guest names should be on the back of it (opposite of where his mailing address is) or what would otherwise be page 3 of 4.
Bob, my son is in IT A school. The same thing happened with us. In spite of providing all that information at MEPS, I had to scan a copy and send it to Great Lakes. Also, do not be surprised if you are contacted and interviewed by a Federal Agent. Top Secret clearance is involved.
Brandon, unfortunately because of a misinformed young lady at the Navy Lodge, we stayed at the Ramada. I was told by her that you had to have a military ID to stay their in spite of telling her it was for my son's PIR. Anyway, I tried I believe it was a Holiday Inn and they were booked so I panicked a bit thinking that the area hotels may be booked solid (there was also a huge event going on in Chicago that weekend). Since the Ramada was listed in the brochure sent along with the form letter, we booked it. We didn't have any bugs in the room but that was the only positive. It was dingy, drab, laid out horribly (difficult to navigate around and we had two rooms that were seemingly miles apart) and the staff was a bit abrupt. So as the others have pointed out, I would pretty much stay anywhere else.
Got the shirts! Thank you very much. Now if only the temp would get above zero I could wear them for all to see. I appreciate the gesture. Best regards, and many blessings to you and your family.
Thank you Elmo for the welcome to Navy Dads. I'm looking forward to my continue journey and adventure as a Navy mom. Very proud of my sailor. . .Go Navy!!!
First I would like to say thanks to E.G. for creating such an awesome website and allowing me to be part of it. God Bless all our sailors and Marines on this Memorial Day. Both Past and Present
Thank you Elmo for creating such a great place for us Navy Dads to share thoughts, feelings and to ask questions. Having two boys in RTC at once will be overwhelming at times, as just having Dylan in now makes me feel as though I have lost a little part of my daily routine. Our oldest son left for the Army two years ago, so I knew what to expect a little, but it is something you are never really ready for, I dont think. Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to taking advantage of the site and using it to my benefit. Nick
Thanks for the welcome and thank you for creating this tool to help us unknowing parents navigate this crazy, unknown journey our SR's are going through.
Thank you for the welcome to the site i will be buying some gear its all great!!!!! Most of all thank you for all you guys do makes things a lot easier kn owing this info is available
Thanks for the welcome. My son (Jonathan) previously served on the carrier CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman after boot camp December 2001 to Oct 2005. He was in damage control. He also had a cruise to the Med when the Iraq war started and served in the Persian Gulf a year later. Jonathan was released from active duty in 2005 and was a reservist until Dec. 2014 until he decided to go active again. He just completed the MR course (Re-Train) in Great Lake He will be reporting to the USS Pinckney DDG91 on Aug 1, 2014. His reenlistment caught his mother and myself by surprise. In the end it was a good move on his part.
I appreciatethehelp and advice.Like all "newrecruits"have many doubts, questions and concerns, butI knowcancount onNavyDads.comto clarifyallthese points.
Elmo, thanks to you and everyone else running NavyDads.com for putting together such a valuable community for parents. It will be a great asset as we follow our son's Navy career. Jeff W
Thanks so much for creating this site where extended Navy families can come together and get information to help them through the especially difficult initial enlistment. It's truly a Godsend!
I have a question and not sure where to go with it. James' maternal grandfather was not able to navigate the internet to watch PIR last Fri. (7/25) on the live stream. Paternal grandfather did manage and was thrilled. Is there a site / web address to go that will replay last Friday's ceremony? Grandpa is a Staunton Military School grad but faculties are failing and he really wanted to see the ceremony. We were trying to guide him in even after the band began but to no avail. I even emailed the link from my iPhone but he still couldn't manage to get it pulled up. If there is any way that I can direct a proud grandfather to a replay of the last PIR, he would be eternally grateful. Thanks again for your service, as well as your family's!
Thank you for this website and all you have done for the navy dads and families. I am looking forward to staying involved with my son through this site and seeing what he is doing.
I appreciate the family that we all share, all of our KIDS are the Best of the Best. Not many are willing to sacrifice the civilian life we enjoy in this country! Anyone have a Kid in Ship 12/ Div 311? That's my Daughters unit. Hope all's going well with your Loved One!! Semper-Fi from an OLD Jarhed
Thanks Elmo..your words are much appreciated. Look forward to hearing from my boy but this site really gives me alot of insite into what he is experiencing.
Thank you for making this happen. Having this access makes me feel a part of a network of Dads and Families. Learning everyday the Navy Way. Trying to figure out ABH A school graduation at NAS Pensacola. I've read six weeks and my son says 48 days not counting weekends and holidays. I heard from other Dads also not counting indoctrination week and they say they heard from past A school Dads that there was "a lot of down time" not counted in the 48 days. Trying to make plans to attend because I live 9,000 miles away in the middle of nowhere with only two flights a week off the island that are always booked; and you can't hold the seat because because it costs $150 penalty to change per flight and it takes four flights to NAS Pensacola. And more importantly, my employer requires 45 days notice to process leave requests. Thank you.
I knew that you were always around. We are well on this home front. Adam is still with us Andrew has transitioned to shore duty at NAS Whidbey Island. Alyssa is with VFA 34 at NAS Oceana. All are healthy. working through life.
Thanks Elmo! I appreciate the warm welcome and look forward to utilizing this site as my son,, Future Sailor Nikolas, wraps up his DEP and ships to GL on 3/3/15.
thank you my son has been waiting for a while to go in and is excited! im just trying to wade thru all the stuff to keep me and my wife on an even keel! he leaves on December 9th.
This is my first post here, and I'm glad I found you guys. I may or may not have met one of your sons through my son. But all of the Navy personal have been very friendly and professional. I am concerned due to recent events for the safety and security of all our Military personal including my son.
I cannot mention which areas are of concern but in time I will know who and where I can bring up my concerns. Are there others that feel certain things need to be looked at or changed to make our guys safer overall?
My son Graduated Buds on 10/6/2014 and is in Alaska now and returning to Coronado on 11/26 will be graduating 6/12 /2015 is there any other fathers that have your son graduating then?
Thanks everyone, it's been an adjustment for my family and I having a sailor in the family. When I hear friends talk about sending their kids off to college and how tough that is I think to myself, "They don't know n'thing" Dropping my son off at the recruiting station and having to turn my back and walk away, not knowing when I'd hear from him again, was probably the hardest thing I have done since he was born.
But it's all good, he's home on leave for a week and soon will be off to the fleet on a guided missile destroyer
