Yes, they do work pretty quickly. Boxing up the personal belongings is one of the first things they do. During this first week, called "P" week, they learn things like how to salute, folding clothes, making up their racks, all those details. You may get a call from him in about three weeks or so. It's not a guaranteed call, but with any kind of luck, you'll hear from him.
