Paul's Braggin' Place

But to the hero, when his sword
Has won the battle for the free,
Thy voice sounds like a prophet's word,
And in its hollow tones are heard
The thanks of millions yet to be.
Fitz-Greene Halleck

Some words Eric sent the evening before the Theodore Roosevelt left on cruise on Sept. 8, 2008:

I leave tomorrow to assist in maritime operations. To do my job in assisting in aviation maintenance which will in the end help to put warheads on the foreheads of those who dare to upset the balance, to hurt the innocent and to those who we deem terrorists. As in the rich naval tradition since October 13th 1775 I sacrifice my time and being to put my life in the hands of my fellow shipmates who in turn puts those same trusts into mine. To cast off and set sail to cross the seas in something bigger than what it is we can understand. To help those who need it is what we do, although we may be the cold forged steel harvesters of death in the modern age, we supply hope and change to those who need it most. In these final moments I realize that everything I've done, sacrificed in this last year all amount to something now. It finally means something. What I'm not sure but its reassuring to know that I'm not here in vain. I will dearly miss you all and cannot wait till my return next year. I look forward to seeing you all and telling my tales of other lands and the sea. Wish me fair winds and following seas as I look forward to my return home.

Tiger Cruise - My Long Promised Follow-Up

Posted on June 26, 2012 at 1:30pm 0 Comments

I sat here and just re-read all my posts about my Tiger Cruise experience and realized I still had not completed the promised follow-up.  It is not that I haven't tried....at least a dozen times I've sat down to write this, but words eluded me.  I'm not sure why.  But I'm gonna try again- so please bear with me!!

Much has happened over the past few years and much has changed.  Kat is no longer in the Navy- her enlistment was up in '10 and she lives outside Seattle in…

A Virtual Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

Posted on March 7, 2010 at 9:21pm 0 Comments

I ran across a very interesting website that I thought I would share....it is a virtual Vietnam Veterans memorial wall.....one of the pages lists those that gave their lives by state....click a state name and you can eventually get to a list of medals and often a bio. This was a monumental amount of work and it is a reminder that many gave their lives in a far away land with a funny name.......

Thanks Paige!

I wanted to take a minute to thank Paige for opening her home up to a number of Navy parents yesterday in Prescott Valley. It was a great chance to meet others with kids in the Navy and to compare stories...and to brag a little too!! I know Paige will post some photos as well but here are a couple.....

Thanks to Paige and to neighbor Brenda for all the work and hospitality! It was fun… Continue

Tiger Cruise - Homecoming !

Posted on May 16, 2009 at 12:30am 3 Comments

Wow….homecoming….after seven-plus months at sea everyone was returning to US soil and their families. I knew it was going to be a memorable day with lots of mixed emotions for all.

Eric and I had agreed to make it another 06:00 day, but around 05:00 I managed to wiggle out of the rack and get cleaned up. I wasn’t sleeping anyway, so why stare at the inside of my eyelids when I could go ahead and get cleaned up and get ready for the day. The ship’s movement had eased over night and…

Hi Again... Just searched and found one of your previous answers on this... So Its not Ship 5, but more like the 'medical hold' section... Any info is appreciated

Hi Paul! Thanks for the welcome!  So big question... We just got word that my son-in-law has been put in the RCU, Recruit Convalescent Unit.  Waiting for medical tests.  What can you tell me about this? Is this the infamous Ship 5?

Thank you for the links Paul. Very much appreciated. Our son writes us as soon as his yeoman duties are up to date and as frequently as he can highlighting his days and even the not so eventful. He is in the top three for top cadet scoring at the moment. We're extremely proud that he gets "volunteered" to demonstrate skills. Proud at the leader he is becoming. Battle Stations 21 a mere two weeks away. Looking forward to his school time.

Thank you for the welcome; I was USN myself (ET on USS Anzio CG-68) from 1995-2001 so I'm sure there's quite a few things that Bryson will have in common with me; very odd to be in the same position that I put my own father in ~27yr ago though :-)

Thanks Paul. Right now I guess he got moved to Ship 5. He has two medical waivers stemming from a DVT he had in high school from an injured vein. It’s been a year long and arduous process involving many military and civilian doctors to understand the records and get the waivers. Apparently now they want a waiver for a factor 5 gene he tested positive for back in 2018. I’m not sure how much fight he has left in him. He’s been trying for four years to get into the military and finally gets in and now this. I’m praying for him.

Thank you for the warm welcome. My son AT1 is currently on deployment and has been in for 11 years now. I’m very proud of him serving our country. I was recently invited to do a tiger cruise this year and so I have looking for current info on the cruise, where to go, what to do, what to pack etc. Can anyone enlighten me???
