I am a General contractor. I am 51years old. I have been told I was blessed with the long gene as I have made something for our family out of good old fashioned hard work. I have become affectionately known around our home as Dr. 2x4. I tend to way in on subjects around our house a little on the heavy side. Mom is the Ying and I am the Yang. I think together we have brought a good balance of viewpoints to our sons life. I enjoy golf, racquetball, swimming and weightlifting. I am ever hopeful that there is a motorcycle in my future.

What Were Your Feelings When Your Sailor Joined The Navy:
I was very happy for him. My wife and I were continually wondering where was this young mans life headed. It seems most young men his age are all out wandering aimlessly. I mentioned the military option many times previously to his deciding to sign up. In this day and age I think we parents have been guilty of doing to much for our children. I knew the military would help him find himself. I know he signed up because we encouraged him to but I know he will take full ownership of this and make us all proud of him. As we get closer to his boot camp date we are starting to see signs that he is taking this seriously. We pray for him every day. I know this will be the best thing he as ever done. I am extremely proud that he is taking charge of his life.

Thanks for the information. I probably would be so mad if someone would have given us a realistic expectation and followed through with it. But to say the info would be available at a certain time and then not providing it just drives me crazy.

Glad you were able to elevate your son's case to the Sentator's office; they do have leverage and it is their job to work for us. I know first hand that military docs are not all knowing. After reading your notes, your son could have eaten somthing or even exposed to something that caused an reaction, If he was in the Nuke program the main cause could be stress. Nevertheless there is a ryhme and reason for it all. Hang in there and it will all work out for the best.

Call your Fed senators and reps and find a good physican. Ask for your son to be allowed to move to different rate (career field/job). The issue is the system has so many kids that want in so they have a pick and choose. If you push the issue you can make changes but if you do not you will not win (loose).

Robert...The waiting begins.....Man the very best to your family and to Todd. It seems like yesterday my son David was on his way from Seattle to Chicago....And about midnight or so we got the 1 minute call....Dave on ship 13 div 358 and if battle stations go well PIR next Friday. I am proud of your son and I am sure you are proud of him joining the finest Navy in the world! Congrats to him getting in the Nuke program also. Please tell mom to start writing and send photo's. Your next call after tonight might not come for 4 to 6 weeks depending much on how his division does. My family can not wait until next week for our sons graduation. God's blessings to Todd and your family...Scott

Welcome to NavyDads Robert ! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun, useful, and educational as I have. Explore the site and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I certainly have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors in the family - my son Eric (AM3) recently returned from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat (MC3) returned last fall from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Robert this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Todd is doing! We do ask that you remember that we talk about the Navy here and we must keep the security and safety of our sailors in mind at all times. On the right side of every NavyDads page is an area we call About This Site. Please take a minute and read through the Operations Security (OPSEC) link and the NavyDads Guidelines link.

As a parent of a sailor currently or soon to be at Great Lakes you'll have many questions about what your son is going through. Thanks to one of our members we have two excellent videos that you can access from the Video area on the NavyDads.com main page: New Bootcamp 1 of 2 and New Bootcamp 2 of 2. These videos will answer many of your questions and concerns and will give you a better understanding of how the United States Navy transforms our children into sailors! In the Navy Bootcamp group is a discussion called "A MUST READ for All New Navy Parents". I would suggest you take a few mintues to read through this post as it will do a lot to give you some understanding about what your sailor is learning and why.

Be sure to spend some time in the Bootcamp group- there are many questions and answers available to help you understand what your sailor is going through. And as PIR draws closer, be sure to spend some time going through the PIR-Tips, Hints and Helps group- we’ve tried to assemble some tips and suggestions to make your sailor's PIR more enjoyable. And stop by the NavyDads offical store- Navyoutfitters.com. Show your support for NavyDads by wearing the latest in NavyDads attire. Best Regards- Paul

Robert, Welcome Aboard!

My son is an ABE aboard the USS Ronald Reagan in San Diego, Ca. and my family and I couldn't be prouder of him. When he first enlisted I found NavyForMoms in searching for answers to my son's future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads like n4m's but I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and I hope this site will benefit fathers that come behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your Sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud Navy Dads just like myself. I hope this site benefits you and your family throughout your sons journey in the Navy. Thank Todd for his service for me and thanks again for joining us.

Sincerely, EG
