The more time you spend on the site and exploring the better you'll understand what he is going through and what to expect.  We have all gone through this...my self twice, once with my daughter and once with my son.  As you have questions or concerns, ask and some one can help you address them.....when you are sitting at PIR it will all be worth it!!!
Your feelings are to be expected. There are a few websites that can ease the transitions and answer questions. My son's recruiter was very helpful too. Enter "RTC Navy Great Lakes" into a search engine to find the websites. We are all in this together Dad, hang in there!

Hey James, he will be alright, My son ships out of Denver today for Basic as well.

I know how you feel, my son left on 07/11 and let me tell you we miss him so much already, we got his personal box back on friday and boy did it hit us that he was truly gone away. e will keep your son in our prayers.
I got to go down to MEPS and see him get sworn in this morning...what an awesome experience to get to share with him. Very proud dad here...
Hello James and just to say that I know how you felt. I was in the same boat when my son signed up a year ago, but he just left for Great lakes on July 11th .  Less than two weeks ago and man do I miss him so much. I am proud of your son for the choice that he made, our thoughts and prayers go out with him and your family, you all are apart of a bigger family now (The Navy Family). Welcome aboard James.

James, I know how you feel.  My daughter left on July 11th and my son on July 12th.  I have not gotten the letter yet and am just praying they graduate the same day.  Life sure has gotten lonely around here losing my fishing, workout and boating buddies.

I wish you and your son the best.  Maybe we'll meet up in Great Lakes!

Rich that is awesome, my son left also on the 11th of July, maybe yours and mine are in the same Division, I got my letter on last friday. Also lets kep in touch and maybe we wil see each other on graduation day which is on 1 Sept.

My grandson left on the 13th. He was prepared, his mother...not so much. We await the company/ship/PIR information so the support letters can begin. As a Navy veteran, I can't stress enough the importance of writing your recruit...nothing lifts the heart more than hearing your name during mail call. Bless your children for their service.

Jim,

I did not get the "I am there and ok" call...I have a friend whose son left last week and they said it was about 48 hours after arrival that they got the call...I work from home and have kept the home phone by my side since he left...If I have not gotten a phone call, should I still expect one? I did send him off with self addressed stamped envelopes and a calling card like I had been reading to do....

The call is typically no more than about 20 seconds long...very short and scripted...if there are ANY issues with phone service or connections the call won't go though and you may get another...stress MAY as most of the time you will not.  If there was an issue you'll be notified...no news is good news right now so keep the faith that all is good!!

Daughter got letter yesterday...Patrick is in Div 297 and PIR is 9/9/11
