change rating to Undesigned during RTC

Jack u can do it if u put ur mind in to it, there is nothing we can not do if we dont try hard enough 

make sure that thats what u want. Becaouse if thats not wthat u want it does not matter how hard u try

Jack,

In today’s budget driven recruiting the "needs of the Navy" come first. That is what the recruiters told my daughter "she would be offered a rating (job) based on her ASVB score and what rating the Navy needed to fill".

It will be difficult to change your job (rating) at RTC. Once you entered into the DEP program you are being scheduled into a training pipeline from your first day at Boot camp through a school and based on your performance on to C school.

Remember the Navy knows how to train people. They have trained thousand of sailors before you. You will be placed in a learning position at your first command and you will be mentored on the job.

Lose the negative I don't think I can attitude! Instead give it your best, study, and make up your mind that you have the ability to secede.

Ive heard after school you are asked to list a preference of your assignments. They try to accomodate that but on occasion you may still get something you dont want. Im sure others can shed more light on this.

 

Dont worry though. Second thoughts are normal. Every one who has gone to 4 years of college has changed their majors too. I changed mine 3 times. Obviously the military frowns on indecision, my point is just that your apprehensions come from natural feelings.

I talked to Sailorette the other day. She said they allowed some people to change. But this kind of thing fluctuates week to week on a needs based basis (obviously the Navys needs). She said one kid signed as something and that classification filled up and they listed him as unsigned. 

 

So as of a few weeks ago the answer would be. Yes/Maybe

In my era, undesignated was a great thing. In todays Navy, I'm not so sure. The problem with underdesignated in todays Navy is they won't let these sailor get rated for at least 18 to 24 months. Which means they cannot take the Petty Officers 3rd class exam for 2 years. Then they also have to wait to the increment date to be advanced.

Had the same person chose Boatswain Mate (BM) or whatever rating from the beginning, they probably be an E5 by then. Unlike my time when we had waivers or Command Advance Programs (CAP) that let us advance quickly, todays Navy is not like that. 

Frankly, I truly wished everyone had to do 1 year on a ship undesignated prior to "A" school just to give them an idea on how the Navy works. But those times are long gone. Now, for any sailor, I would want them to learn the Navy and advance so they can support a family. Family is #1 in my book, side-by-side with the Navy. 

I have a sailor on my website (NavyDEP.com) that has 3 yr 5 mo in now. This sailor was in my sons bootcamp division.  He had an "A" school, but messed up and they sent him to the fleet undesignated.  He now is as an OS3. The soonest he can take the 2rd class test is this September. My son will be taking the September exam too for 1st class.

Remember, if he gets into a crappy rating that is overmanned and doesn't advance, then they will be given the boot after 6 years due to High Year Tenure.

This CTR made Chief in 5 years 5 months. Would a undesignated make it in the same time? I know alot of Chiefs are ticked off because they don't think this guy "Served his time". But guess what, the Navy says he did, and I must beleive in the Navy.

So, don't get me wrong, I think sailors learn so much being undesignated. However, in todays Navy, it doesn't put the same food on the table as someone that's rated and has advanced.  By food, I mean Steak and Potatoes, and not bottle of Cheese Whiz.

My question is related to this discussion, I was wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of going to RTC with an undesignated rating if a person is not sure what job they want to do. My daughter didn't score as high as she could have and was told that she would attend another 2 weeks of training after RTC in the 3 rates that she qualifies for and after experiencing those 3 jobs she could then chose which job that she would prefer. I don't recall what the program was that the job specialist had put her under.

Thank you all! I never respect to recieve so many good advices from you. I already found my way to do my duty in Navy. I will hold my rate and will not go undesigned. Now I'm focus on lossing weight and preparing for the BootCamp. Thank you all!

as you work towards RTC Jack make sure you run...the timed run (target 1.5 miles in 12:30) seems to be the most difficult test...

Just as Paul says, work on the run.  That is the area that gets most recruits.  If you have your run down, then the rest of boot camp is fairly easy....
