My daughter heads for boot camp next saturday and then to lackland for her MA school. Does anybody know usually what her first assignment could be? Are they put on ship first or could a land base be in the picture? Any help would be appreciated.

I can give you the long and the short version all in one sentence-It all depends on where the Navy needs her. That is not trying to be funny! She can put in a request for duty station, but they will make the final decision. I wish her all the best, she will be fine.It usually is us parents that have the difficulty.LOL
Mike....My daughter has just gone through this. She is a Master at Arms. After "A" School, she had a choice of 4 assignments. All were land-based....Three were overseas...the forth came with future deployments....there are no gaurantees though...it is wherever the Navy needs her to be. I wish her the best of luck!
Needs of the Navy rule.............
Thanks everyone. I guess I'm the one having the anxiety here. I guess my mom and dad went through the same when I went in. The Navy gave me two choices and then sent me somewhere else. haha. I know she will be in good hands and will make us proud where ever she ends up.
my son is graduating friday from lackland and will be shipping out to yokosuka japan at end of march had no state side deployments offered unless have a family or something about debt to income or bad credit hope this is not bad news

Hey Mike, my son graduates tomorrow from Lackland. He'll be stationed in Washington State. He's going PRP. Supposed to be there 4 years but again whatever the Navy wants.
Also if you're on Facebook, U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command has a page for bootcamp. It was a saving grace for my wife and I. Kept us posted every single step of the way. My wife added me to facebook just so I could follow RTC's page. If you don't have facebook, it's worth it just to have access to that page.
Good luck to your family!
When my son graduated from Great Lakes 2008, he remained there for approximately 2 weeks before going to A-school in Texas and his first assignment was overseas for 18 months. It's the parents that have the most difficulty Best of Luck for your Daughter
I recently replied to the daughter at boot camp. It just seems recently that we had gone thru the boot camp graduation and A- School graduation but these events took place in 2008. That same year he was deployed to his first assignment, overseas. He was there for 18 months. When he returned he was only stateside for 2 years. Currently he is on a second deployment overseas again and for over a year. Please don't ask where he is assigned, unable to tell. We still are able to keep in touch every 2 weeks, he calls.
Thanks Mike, I think she really wants to be stationed overseas at first. I just hope she doesn't regret what she asks for. haha. Tell your son Thank you for his service and God Bless.

Just a few questions from a new dad whose FS does not leave for BC until June of this year... have got that part covered, but how long is the A-School at Lackland [She signed up for MA also] and do they have the C-School directly after A-school or do they complete A-school and then get selected [or pick] their own C-school. I just have this thing about being well informed. Have almost got the timing figured out for her PIR from GL, she goes in on 61912, just trying to also get the time and travel figured out to take off work for all of the graduations. Those things that we as a parent don't want to miss because they don't happen a 'second' time and there are rarely do overs. Mike
