I didn't see a thread for Navy OCS class 12-12, so I thought I'd start one in the hopes of connecting with other families/friends of Canidates in this same class. My name is Ellen and our eldest son Joe arrived in Newport to report on March 25, 2012. Feel free to sign up and respond so we can introduce ourselves and share questions, comments, or concerns.

Thanks, I'll look into this today and I'll see what I can come up with. Have a great time at Graduation this Friday & congratulate that new Officer for me. Go Navy!

I've found the following 39 page OCS manual very insightful and the best information to date. It breaks down the mental/physical challenges and inspections by week/day. The maunual is written for canidates, but it gives family/friends an informative view of exactly what is expected of the canidate by phase and week.
Coupled with the youtube Hi Mom videos, you can really get a perspective of what the canidates are going through to earn the Ensign bar.

I'm sure my son wishes graduation was this Friday, but he's in 12-12 and has 9 weeks left. At least the class is nearly done with the grueling indoctrination phase:) And, at least he's not the incoming 13-12 starting this Sunday. Have a great day E.G. And, I look forward to seeing some additional info about OCS posted by the navy dads admin:)

Hi Bruce. Yes I've seen that video on the OCS site. The site is worth book marking and combing over. But, in my opinion the Navy Dads administrators may be onto something here. Family/freinds are looking for more information; something with substance they can sink their teeth into to get a better understanding of what OCS is like. And, there is little to no information on the web in regards to graduation too. Many families miss out on scheduled events they didn't know about like the meet and greet the evening before graduation.
Do you know about the Cadio box they're allowed to have week 8, once they hit the applied leadership phase? They're officially allowed food from home etc. And, are some of the boxes cleverly decorated inside with photos and themes:) The LO's really look forward to that Cadio box!
We did not know about the Cadio box. Is there a site explaining it further?
Bruce
With your guys help, we'll be glad to make that happen. We will put in the time to provide pages on OCS information for future parents. Anything you can think of, just let us know. But I'm also like Jim, I have very little knowledge in this area. If you guys are willing to provide us with needed info, we'll make sure to get it done. I will start with some of your suggestions, videos, scheduled events (where is that info so I can add it to our site) Cadio Box! have no clue to what that is but look forward to learning about it. Where is the best info for a weekly schedule of what your Sailor will be doing at OCS? etc.
If you can point us in the right direction for accurate descriptions of these things. We can then build pages in our own words so that ND's can provide them all in one place, our OCS Group.
Thanks for all the help with this. I hate you guys have to be the Ginny pigs in this but we have to start somewhere. LOL Hopefully what we can accomplish together will make a huge difference in how much information their is available online for new OCS parents.

I learned about the candio box by reading navy moms. And, I saw the boxes on the hi mom youtube class videos. Some of the classes use photos of candio box day toward the end of their videos. Upon seeing those boxes, I actually sent away for some Navy themed stuff to decorate the inside of the box. All the inside box decorations are unique for each LO. I plan on doing several different themes on the inside of the box.
One flap with a walk down memory lane of my son; child to college grad, and hopefully a photo of him in OCS. Another side an ode to everyone in the family that has served in the Armed Forces; a uniform pictoral. It'll be four generations from several different branches including my son:)
The following is an active discussion on OCS Navy moms pertaining to the candio box. It is placed in the mail the beginning of week 8, to make sure it arrives for Cadio box day week 9:)

The best weekly step by step I've found is the Survival Guide, which I posted about earlier. And, despite it being written in 2007, to my knowledge all of the activities, tests, and inspections are still the same. Below is the URL to the Survival Guide again; a must read and save in my opinion. It gives insight into what the canidate is doing and being challenged with on a weekly basis. It also drives home the point that canidates really don't have time to write. Each moment is precious for studying, prepping for inspections, and trying to stay a step ahead of the game:)

I'll help you as much as I can E.G. and will be happy to do so. I've spent a great deal of time searching the web, and the info about Navy OCS is fractured and meal peaced to say the least. And, for some of these young men/women and their families, it is a whole new world they're diving into if they've never served in the Armed Forces. They could really use an informative place to find answers, while connecting with others.

Paul,
Thx for the idea on the house. We have now rented a cottage in Newport for June 14-16. Don't yet know Joe's schedule for after graduation but we hope he can spend at least another night with family before departing for Pensacola where he is to head for pilot training. Joe continues to report positive things about his OCS experience.
We look forward to meeting you as well. Do you have any info on a PIR on June 14th? We read somewhere in all the materials that this event occurs the day before graduation.
I recall from my experience at OCS in 1968 that we had such an event associated with graduation. Don't recall what we called it.
Bruce
Hey Bruce and Paul, Just wanted you to know our sons do know each as per a phone call from our son today. He has stated that Chris and Joe are good guys:) I look forward to meeting your families on June 15th. Carpe diem Joe, Chris, and Joe. 4 weeks down and 8 more to go!! The most dreaded and grueling phase of indoctrination is now behind them. Onward to academics phase gentlemen:)
Just got a call from Joe this AM. He's in great spirits, enjoying the whole experience. He said he enjoyed Navy History which is the class they had over the past weeks. Engineering is next. He could hardly talk though from being "ballistic", as required in having conversations with the DIs.
I think we know more about what's ahead for June 14 and 15 than the OCs do right now. Look forward to meeting you then.
