Navy Dads

My son was dis-enrolled from the Nuke Power School since he was not able to cope with the lessons and failed a couple of tests.  Although he is very disappointed he still wants to continue in the Navy. What are his options? He has already completed the Machinist Mate A school as part of Nuke MM school in Goose Creek. Is there any possibility of him getting a change in his Rating? Like IT? Grateful for advice.

have to understand that many, if not most rates, are overmanned.  He may have few choices as far as a rate that is available.....

thank you very much.

I just spoke to my adopted Son (everyone needs a few extra sailors) He is an MM3 (SS) "A" Ganger serving on the USS Tennessee SSBN 734.  Hunter told me that he can either become an A ganger like him or a Torpedoeman.  Either way he should seek out his Detailer as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for this information. When I spoke to my sailor he told me that since he has already completed training to be a conventional machinist, most likely he would get that rating. However, he would still like to get some training. Thank you again.

Needs of the Navy come first. I was disenrolled from OT "A" school back in 1980 but was reclassified as an RM and shipped out to San Diego. At the time they needed Radiomen. I met a lot of dropped nukes in the navy and all of them found themselves another rating and seemed to be happy with actually getting away from Nuke school, so either way he'll make out just fine. For me, my drop was mutual; I deliberately dropped from it due to lack of interest; besides, the OT rating back then was overmanned, so it was a win-win and I am certain your son will do just fine. Be proud though that he actually made it into nuke school because back in the day, the drop rate for that school was very high.

Thank you for your email. My son was re-rated as conventional MM. Thank you again.

Chandroth, he'll probably be on the "A" Gang like my son. Did your son attend sub school or was he a surface nuke?

He is arriving in Groton, CT for submarine training this week.

A former shipmate of mine used to be stationed at Sub School (BESS) back in 2003 and he gave me sound advice to pass on to my son:

1. Follow the rules

2. Follow the student study guides and STUDY

3. NO ALCOHOL allowed during the time at BESS

He said if he does all of the above he'll pass the school. Apparently, they get to go on liberty after school and study session and most weekends off unless they have duty, which means they'll stand barracks watches or watches at the school.

Good luck to your son, Chandroth!

Thank you very much for your sound advice.  I have already passed it on to my son. Thanks.

Honestly, I think our boys shall do fine at BESS. Imagine the learning experience they're facing. For me, I always was fascinated with not only our submarine force, but their missions especially. I sometimes wish I could do it all over again and this time I would go subs rather than surface navy!
