Greetings all, my son has PIR 12/28 and is then slated to arrive in San Antonio on 12/29 to check in at his A-School @ Lackland.
Can anyone advise if he would have an opportunity to be off base during the New Year’s holiday, or as a new arrival would he be confined to base?
I am trying to determine if I would be able to visit with him more in S.A. rather than going to PIR at RTC.
Any insight is very much appreciated.
Also, is there any formal graduation ceremonies when they complete this MA school @ Lackland that the families can attend?

Lance, Welcome to Navy Dads. If there is any chance of going to the PIR I highly recommend it. It is a truly moving event. You are in one of the longest halls I have ever seen, filled with family and friends of the graduating sailors. My wife and I were so glad we made the effort to see him. My son had his on Nov 12 and we only got about 6 hours with him, it was worth every minute. Jason is set to graduate this Friday and he never mentioned any type of graduation at MA school. I know it was about 4 weeks into "A" school before they were even allowed to leave the base. After he graduates "A" school he should get 2 weeks off before going to his assignment.
Jeff,Thanks for the response. .. his mom is going up to RTC to visit with him for Christmas and then staying through PIR.
I also was originally planning to go to PIR however after speaking with his recruiter found that he would only have a few hours leave and off the next day to San Antonio.
I would have preferred to have a little more time with him, however it looks like those few hours following PIR will be the best scenario; plus he is his section leader, provided that they pass their drill inspection and it would be a disappointment not to share in his accomplishment.
Thanks again for the response and I will hold off on going to SA until they are allowed leave.
Congratulations to your son Jason, and thank him for his decision to serve… Also any tips I can pass along to Jorgen re to MA school is greatly appreciated.
Lance, Just about anything is possible. My son is a city boy and did not shoot except for video games. He qualifed Expert with the pistol and missed expert with the rifle by 4 points. He was orginally slated for Rescue Swimmer but that got changed the night before graduation. Is advisor told him to go to MA school, so he only learned about MA's Thursday night. He finished 4th in his class. Study hard, listen to the instructors, push himself. The higher he finishes the better posts he has to choose from. Don't bring any of his electronics to the PIR, wait about a week after he arrives in San Antonio you should get an address from him so you can mail it.

Lance, I agree with Jeff especially on going to PIR. Aside from the birth of my kids, seeing my daughter Amber graduate bootcamp was a very proud moment for me. She followed in my footsteps since i am a navy veteran. Fun part is Jason,Jeff R.'s son and Amber graduated boot together and now MA school together. Jason was #4 And Amber #2. They got to pick their orders for their next duty station. Jason did whip Amber in firearms by outscoring her but she was the only female to qualify expert with the pistol(Jason outscored her) and she missed expert with the rifle by only 13 points.
Lance I also recommend you try to get other MA parents to sign up here. Jeff R and I have had fun with our kids competeing against each other, Have we not Jeff R.
Jay, thanks for the reply...Yes I agree re to PIR.
When my oldest son, Kris, graduated from Paris Island it was a very proud day for us all.
Now Kris will be in the stands watching his brother graduate, we are all looking forward to his PIR.
Prior to Jorgen leaving for RTC, Kris had him out at the local range for awhile so hope he does well next week in qualifying.
Not sure as to how many from his current ship will be going onto MA school, but I would think it should be a few so he should have fun competition.
Where did your daughter end up for her first duty station?
Congrats on her achievements and to you both for your service...
I always wanted to serve in the Navy, was a Sea Cadet for many years...However ended up in a Police Academy instead.
Thanks again Jay & Jeff for your responses.
