Ken,
My son graduated on June 28th and is now in A School in GL. Here is what we experienced. Right after graduation your son will have about 45 minutes or so to hang out with you. He then has to report back and gather his things to be transported over to A School for check-in. The check-in process took until roughly 3 or 4pm. You will then be able to pick up your son for "liberty" that night, but he will have to report back to base by 10pm. You can pick your son back up on Saturday and Sunday morning around 7am or so for liberty, but will have to be back to base at each night around 10pm. They will tell your son exactly what time he can be picked up and returned to base each day. Also, you will need to sign your son out and back in each day so make sure you leave plenty of time to get him back each night before he has to muster. My wife and I booked our trip for the entire weekend. We flew out on Monday morning so we could spend the maximum amount of time we could with our Sailor. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. I will be more than happy to help.
It depends. After PIR, they need move into new quarters. By themselves, and the right arm must be free to salute. Our daughter took about five hours after PIR to get stuff moved, and the new quarters might be way over there. Normally, they will need to be back on base before 1800 on Sunday - and there is a lot of walking to do. Our daughter had to call in twice per day to see if she had watch duty (she did not) but was lucky to stay with us. Others were not as fortunate. It isn't "time off" guaranteed.
they need to report back each night and may have duty/watch.....your sailor will have the details, but should have liberty through Sunday. And be darn sure to get them back with time to spare....be late for muster and liberty is gone!!!!!
