Navy Dads

Does anyone else have a son or daughter in this group? Our son left on Feb. 4 and we haven't gotten our first letter from him yet.

My son is in that group also and neither his mom or I have received a letter yet. His mom, who is amazing at finding out stuff, told me that they should have had time to write Sunday and we should see something by Friday??

Thanks Josh. We have friends who had a son there a few years ago and she said most of her letters from him arrived on Thursdays. Is your son in the diver program as well?

No problem Sean.
He is in the rescue swimmer program.
His mom was saying that because of Monday being a holiday it should be here Friday. Was your son big into swimming before the Navy?

I wouldn't say he was big into actually swimming as much as he's always been big into scouring the bottoms of streams, rivers, lakes and oceans. He was never on a swim team in school or anything like that but give him a mask, fins and sometimes a snorkel and he'll spend more time under water than above it. We introduced him to the Susquehanna River in central PA at the age of 9 months and he's been a water bug ever since.

Good to hear from someone else with a son in the same group. Hopefully they're already friends and helping each other along.

I'm sure they are!
My son always loved swimming, he did waterpolo and swim plus lifeguarded at the pool thru high school. I assume you'll be in great lakes for the PIR?

Yes sir, we'll be there for sure. Wouldn't miss it. What I still don't know is how much liberty they'll get after the ceremony. I'm trying to find that out so I can firm up reservations on lodging and travel. I thought I heard that they need to be back on base by 1930 Sunday but I'm not sure.

PIR: if your sailor has A-school at Great Lakes he will have to check in (takes about 4 hours) and then will get liberty for the rest of the day but will have to muster back at the base each evening.  He should in that case also get the next two days, but in each case will have to return to the base each evening, and he may have watch during that time.  If his A-school is not in Great Lakes he will ship out on Saturday sometime, but you can get a security pass and stay with him at the airport.  There are no overnight liberties anymore after PIR.

Thanks for the info, Paul. My understanding at this point is that he will attend prep school in Great Lakes for an additional 3-4 weeks after PIR and then ship out to Panama City, FL for A-school after that.

Hopefully that first letter will arrive soon and we'll have more info directly from him.

Excellent! I'm sure I'll see you there.
My son ships out Saturday so we will have him Friday after PIR then spend Saturday at the airport.

Josh,

We received our first letters today! (2 of them written two days apart in the same envelope) Really made our day to hear from him and that he's handling things well. He said they were told early on that they hadn't earned the right to mail yet so I guess that's part of the deal. Said they had 3 of the 4 toughest RDCs there, the ones who work with SEAL contracts. Talked about the 800 divisions being held to much higher standards. Anyway, I hope your family hears from your son too. It was a huge relief to finally get that letter.

Yes I do got first letter today my son is in that div.

Good to hear that, Mike!
