Navy Dads

Mailing addresses for our Sailors are different depending on whether they're attached to the ship's company, the airwing staff, or one of the embarked squadrons. Here are some tips for sending mail:

Place the mailing address inside the package on a seperate piece of paper.
Triple-check the address. Using an incorrect address may misroute, deplay, or prevent your mail from reaching your Sailor.

Completed customs forms are required for packages but not for letters.
Only USPS mail and packages can be delivered to the ship, so don't try to use UPS or FedEx.

Ensure the weight of the contents is evenly distributed.
Enclose all personal hygiene items in a sealable bag.
Place all perishable items in a plastic container or sealed bag.
Use packaging tape on the outside of the box. Do not wrap with string.
Add packing material (filler) on the inside if any portion of the box sags or is easily depressed.

Mail can often take more than a month to reach your Sailor. When we're thousands of miles from shore, mail can't be flown to the ship and a supply ship has to bring it to us. The Military Postal Service Agency requires at least 45 days to have passed before filing a claim.

Do not mail liquids. Liquids weigh a lot, and when they inevitably explode in transit, can ruin many Sailors' packages. The ship's store is well stocked with sodas, juices, energy drinks, sports drinks, and water so it shouldn't be necessary to send beverages.
Mailing anything meltable is not recommended. Your package will experience varying temperatures along its long trip around the globe. The odds are that at some point it will get hot enough to melt chocolate and make a mess out of your package and possibly others.
