hi, I have a son who is a naval aviator and has earned his gold wings. he has completed most of his training up to carrier landing but failed that twice and had to repeat the syllabus twice. he had great difficulty with Landing on the carrier and as a consequence had to go before the regulatory administrative board and their decision was, which just came back last week no flight for him. this makes no sense to me, to have spent this much time and money in training in F 18 pilot and then ground him. there is no alcohol or substance abuse involved now he's left standing in limbo waiting to talk to the skipper and the Admiral. Can anybody shed any light on this because I am totally bewildered by this decision. thank you Jim

   This is not a punishment.....there is no room for error for a carrier landing! Your Son's life and the lives of the deck crew are endangered in a potential accident. Is it possible for him to switch to another aircraft specialty that is "ground-based"? I hope that his flight career is not over and wish him the best of luck!

hi Tom, thanks for the reply I appreciate the feedback. I understand the value of action that was taken here and certainly can appreciate the lives of others concerning that's but what I don't understand is the decision of the regulatory administration groups of no flight. I guess it still up to the skipper an admiral as to what they're going to do but I'm confused by this decision. I would think they would move him to another group lambaste land-basedor otherwise. Thanks for Certaintly keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best I'll come here. I doubt that they will give him a third try but thats always possible.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that he can continue in his training. I can't imagine trying to put down on a pitching deck in all kinds of weather in day or night operations....that is why a Carrier Flight deck is considered the most dangerous job in the World! My daughter is currently serving aboard the Vinson.

Were hoping that " no flight " meant no 3rd try on the carrier landing and not all flights in general. I feel with all his training, he would be a fit some where. Christian, my son is keeping a good attitude about all this. He feels the decision was just but never the less, soul crushing for him and us. It's all he's dreamt about after seeing Top Gun at 7.

So your daughter is heading home? I see the carrier, USS Carl Vinson has left ( we'll just leave that blank )  and headed back to San Diego. You must be excited with  anticipation on seeing your daughter again soon. Does she work on the deck, a paddle or possibly a aviator herself? How long has she been with the navy and has it been a good experience for her?

Yes....after 10 months Deployment! She is Security attached to the Sunliners (VFA-81). She is finishing up year 4 and just picked up 2nd Class. It has been a great overall experience, but she has decided to pick up on her education and will be separating in a few months....Sorry to say.....
