He is already a man! You and your wife made him that way and that is why he joined! GOOD JOB! Now wait until you and see what he does from the start you guys gave him.
I remember the day my son went to Boot Camp the Monday before Thanksgiving Day last year. When I next saw him at PIR, he was the man I always envisioned him to be. He is now on the USS Tortuga stationed in Sasebo, Japan! You will be surprised how quickly time will fly once he begins his time at RTC. Good luck and hang in there. Many of us have gone through this and lived to tell about it! :-)
Eddie, your emotions are perfectly normal. I hadn't talked to my son in 4 months, but I got a call from him last week. I recently had a health issue and had not told him about it as I didn't want him to worry. I was afraid he would be upset with me, but given his growth of maturity, he said he understood exactly why I didn't tell him earlier.Talk about getting emotional! I sure as heck did! Hang in there man....we're here for you!
I'm going through the exact same emotions. My son's mom and I are divorced, but we have always maintained a very healthy and positive relationship and are on very amicable terms. We both went to MEPS yesterday and saw our son Brian off. We got some great quality time with him and I took lots of pictures.
He called me from his cell phone when he landed in IL and we had a nice chat. He told my daughter that he was able to sit next to a real cute "Navy girl"...haha! He also liked the fact that they showed a few episodes of "The Office" on the flight which is his favorite show. Later, he texted me that he was very tired and probably wouldn't get to sleep until the next day. He was worried a bit that he might "mess up" due to exhaustion and asked that I pray for him. I got to exchange a few texts with him. Later, he called his mom, but she was unable to answer so he spoke with his step-dad at the time.
I go through periods of being upbeat about all that is ahead of him and then when I walk by his room or see some of his things, the emotions start to well up. I know these first few days are probably the hardest...both for the recruit and for the family!
Ditto to what Lowell just said. The man in him is just now coming out. And when I first saw him in his dress blues at PIR, the pride you will feel (and her) will be indescribible. Trust me. He has made a wise choice. And it made that feeling I had when he shipped off to boot camp, similar to yours, fade away. A new chapter entirely begins. Keep the faith, and know he will be fine. He is amongst other fine young men in the exact same stage of his life. TC
