Thanks for the advice, and congrats to your son. I know exactly what you mean about being able to exhale; my wife and I sometimes feel like we are there on the beach with him. Riding on the no news is good news boat, can kind of suck.

Again glad to hear your boy past his first right of passage into the SPECWAR community.

My son texted me @ 1:22 am said he just got through & was going to bed because he has to get up at 4:00 am. They are certainly prepping them.

This is what my son said about Thursday night, "Night rock portage turned into a beat down till twelve at night elephant walk included no charge." He texted last night saying he was pretty whooped and looking forwad to some rack time this weekend.

If you get a chance I have 2 Blogs on going to Coronado. One about a trip we took during BUDs and one about the trip to SQT Graduation. We stayed on Base at the Gateway Inn and my GS got a pass so we could drive in and out of the Base without him being with us. Out window had a Great view of BUDs Training and we watched some of the Training during the day.

Good luck to everyone. It is a long road and SQT is not much better than BUDs and they loose some there. After they get to their Team the training goes on. Again same as BUDs and SQT. Unfortunately a member of my GS Class lost his life a few week ago in a Training accident that happened after they got to their Team. Just remember from not on The Only Easy Day was Yesterday.

My Family and I are Proud of all your Loved Ones going through this Training and are keeping them in our Hearts.

Good Info, thanks much. I also recommend "Finishing School" by Dick Couch, gives som insight to SQT. I have read several books by him and they are very heplful, not to mention he lives not to far from my neck of the woods.

The Dick Couch book "The Warrior Elite" was helpful to me to understand what go's down in first phase. When the Wife and I talked to the boy once a week usually on Sunday we had less questions for him because we had a feel for the routine so consequently we were all relaxed. Things have changed since that book was published and they did not do some evolutions as seen on Discovery video but similair enough to get the vibe. Nothing was fun according to the boy like "Camp Surf", not fun! One thing that was helpful is to have a friend in PRTT or something like that, they will sneak trainees candy bars or sandwiches to help sustain the white shirts. The boy took "Quitting is not an option" to a different level. He took one evolution at a time and it was more like Don't Quit Now. If the Trainee get's to sunrise on Wednesday their locked in and will survive.
Reading the Couch book or watching the videos gives a sense of the peer pressure that is present but it sounds like it is dialed up ten fold, if a trainee is not putting out all manner of pressure will come down on them from their boat crew and instructors and they "have to go", it truly is survival of the fittest. Boat crew one or the smurf boat are disireable to land in because they have a good chance of staying together and can unify.
We waited until after the second week of second phase to visit because they are going through a lot. Each family should determine that on their own but that was how our lad wanted it and he is calling the shots. We found that the Coronado Brewiing Company is a good place to get lunch or an evening meal. Claytons has great MTO, it's around back from their resturant. There is a diner near the Del that has good breakfasts, every trainee has a desired favorite spot, we let our guy run the show. We wanted to go on the Base but the boy said that was frowned on so we opted out of that. We stayed out of SEAL bars with the boy like McPs and Danny's because that could bring on unwanted pressure. On the ladies site there reference to visiting Bullshirts to get SEAL clothing and what not. That I just don't get, SEALs are humble,they are the silent warriors. If I had wanted to go there and get a tee shirt I know what he would have to say about that. The class prints up tee shirts at the end, he will get me one of those. This experience is the real deal,"The Commited and The Worthy", hard to powder puff it.

Well gents, my boy after much soul searching dropped today. He said the physical part wasn't tough, even with the cold he has, he just had lost the desire to continue and wasn't going to put anybody in the crosshairs/jepordy just going through the motions.

So being that I'm the Admin for this group, I'll be willing to turn over to someone who is still in the class.

My best wishes to those of you who still have men in the program.

John,

Sorry to read about your son's decision. It's not an easy one to make. I admire him for making one of his toughest decisions.

I'm sure Class 281 will miss him.

Wishing him all the best in his career with the Navy.

And John, thanks for being such a great and supportive Dad!

If you're still in need of someone to take over as Admin, let me know. I'm out here in SD and have a good friend in this Class.

Went out to watch night rock portage this Mon past. Big waves. The PIO explained that the waves were due to El Nino. Moon didn't make it out in time. Two guys were injured. Hope they're all recovered.

The time is near, soon the Starting Gun will be fired. The timing will be a surprise to those starting their journey. For those who live in or are visiting Coronado they will be surprised but they will know not to call 911 its just the Navy. While the guys are expection this they will loose their breath and sense of direction from the noise. Everyone hold on tight we are in for a bumpy ride.

My son was the QB for 4 yrs in a large High school. The last text I sent him was...
