Your welcome. Just make sure when you select Seaport Village on the top right to view the ship. When they leave you can usually watch the ship go around & out by Point Loma.

Nimitz Strike Group Set To Deploy
    Story Number: NNS090728-10
    Release Date: 7/28/2009 2:20:00 PM

From Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG), including the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and units assigned to CSG 11, departs July 31 with more than 7,000 Sailors for a scheduled Western Pacific deployment.

During the past few months, Nimitz CSG has conducted several training exercises off the coast of Southern California including composite unit training and joint task force training. They also completed fleet synthetic training as part of the deployment training cycle and are fully prepared and ready to deploy in support of contingency and humanitarian missions.

Last year, Nimitz CSG supported the U.S. commitment to peace and stability in the Pacific region during a four-month deployment. Nimitz CSG supported the maritime strategy by expanding cooperative relationships with the Republic of Korea (ROK) by participating in Operation Key Resolve/Foal Eagle 2008.

Aircraft carriers continue to be one of our nation's primary on-call assets in times of need, and they enable the Navy to execute the six core capabilities of the maritime strategy – forward presence, deterrence, sea control, power projection, maritime security and humanitarian assistance/disaster response.

Commanded by Capt. Mike Manazir, Nimitz was commissioned in 1975, making it the first Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The ship is named for World War II Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz.

The pictures that I have were taken from the helicopter circling the ship in Pat's video. I would gladly share the two pictures he sent with anyone that wants them. They are very high quality pictures. I am not sure what is the proper way of sharing things like this.

Thanks, Cora. It is interesting and informative.
Hope you and the family are doing well. My husband and I are. Can't believe it is a year since my son was in bootcamp.
  • carol

The time flies by. Our son is on his first deployment on the Nimitz, which has been extended, so it's a long one. The places he has been at in just one year...wow, I would have never guessed!
  • carol

I wanted to also say Thanks for your help and support last Thanksgiving. It meant alot to me. :)
  • carol

You were going to have him to dinner, but he had just gotten to Pensacola, and didn't have leave yet. It did mean a lot that you would have fed him.
Glad your daughter is doing well. How did her deployments go? I am accepting your friendship. Have a good night.
  • Mitch

Hi Cora (and Carol) - I enjoyed reading your notes. This is the first deployment for our son Brad on the Nimitz. We watched the Carrier series on PBS with him before he went to boot camp a year ago. So, it was quite a surprise when he got assigned to the Nimitz. It is well worth watching the series. Oh, and Cora, we're some of the people who have heard of the cities you mentioned...we live in Auburn Hills, MI.
