Mark, not sure what happened to the guys in 286, they may have rolled, got dropped or DOR'ed. You might check BUDS Class 286 and they might know something.
Mont.dad2~ Man, that kid of yours is built tuff. All that going on in one body and he hung in, way to go.
The sandbag drill is an endurance challenge but it pushes the guys to go even further my son said. You don't want to waste energy on any thing but focus on holding that 50# sack UP!!.
Still not sure about all the departure at the end of the month and the SD pre-buds out there now. Seems like I am jumping in the middle of mixed groups and roll back and volunteers who stayed in GL and so on...
My son is in pre buds in San Diego, he came home last weekend and we were out of town, but there was a 50# bag of cement on our porch when we got home. Now I know why it was there, of course he could have put it somewhere out of the way, I guess he wanted me to know how heavy it was.
I posted this in The NavyDads Book Nook group tonight:
Most of us are very aware that SEAL Michael P Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for action he took July, 2005 in the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border. But how many of you know about all the events that took place there? I listen to a lot of audiobooks while commuting to and from work and today I finished: Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 by Marcus Luttrell , Patrick Robinson (With). This book details the events of that horrific battle and the terrible loss of life leaving a lone survivor....Marcus Luttell. It's worth it...with a caveat......
This book is NOT for everyone....the language is coarse at times and there is great detail about combat and the terrible injuries it inflicts. Not for wives or moms and not for those that think that war is sanitary and can be conducted with rules and guidelines......this is a brutal account of 4 SEALS facing enormous odds against them and the miracle that allowed one of SEAL Team 10 to live....and tell about it.
Can I make a reservation at the Navy Lodge at Coronado or does my son have to make it? With how busy he is at BUD/s - I am not sure he will have the time to do it.
The times we went someone with Military ID had to make our reservations and also be there to check us in. I don't know if things have changed. You might call and check. I think there are 2 Gateway Inns and a Navy Lodge in the area. We stayed at the Gateway Inn at NAB Coronado and it is across the street from NSWC Complex.
You will need your sons information to make a reservation and he will have to check you in. You can than go to the main entrance / visitor pavilion and get a pass to go on and off wiith out him.. have a great time...
Please keep the families of these guys in your prayers.
More than two dozen American troops are believed to have died in the deadly helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, a U.S. military official told CNN.
Many, if not all, were special operations forces, the official said. If the numbers are confirmed, the incident would be the most deadly for coalition forces in the Afghan war, according to a CNN count of international troop deaths.
.
Well said Hal! All our thoughts and prayers go out to those we've lost and to those they've left behind. The SEAL community is a small one - but we are always there for each other. Amen and HOO YAH!
Well said Hal. We have to keep all the guys in our prayers. Special Ops is spread amoung all the services and each and every guy and gal in all our Military are very special people.
Please forgive me if this is not the correct place to post a link of this nature. In addition to prayers, the families and loved ones of the fallen SEALS will need additional support. Feel free to access the following link if you feel compelled to inquire more about the Navy Seal Foundation.
Toto - not the time for politcal rants (in fact I found it disturbing) - you could trace this issue way back - I am with Hal - Let's honor the members and families with our thoughts and prayers.
Toto, I agree with JTM on this. If anyone else post that they are offended by your post I will remove it. I have a Grandson that is a SEAL and I am very Proud of what he is doing. While I do not want him to go back over there, he will do what is asked of him. We have a section on this site for political talk but this is not the place now or in the future.
We are all in this together and need to unite to support our loved ones who are serving. Our family grieves will all of the families who have lost loved ones and we continue to be so very proud of each and everyone of them.
sorry that number is 90999 and you will get a txt back confirming ten dollars and then you may raise the amount then even higher and it will get billed to your next months cell phone bill . sorry for the skipped number . works rather slick
As life changing for my wife and me as my son's words were "I want to be a Navy Seal" --can't begin to imagine those families getting word of that tragic event. God bless them all.
My Son wants nothing more than to be a SEAL. He passed the physical tests, and his scores were all high enough, however, his eyesight isn't good enough.
He was told to enter the Navy in another capacity, then apply for eye surgery, then transfer later.
What are his real chances of this happening in your opinion?
My son needed the PRK surgery when he when to BUD/S a couple of years ago. He was rolled several times because of it (Waiting for and Healing from). He told me, they are no longer offering this for new recruits. So, the route you mentioned may be the only way.
I agree with John. Since they have changed the rule on eye surgery that would be your only option. There are so many guy wanting to get into the SEAL Program the Navy does not have to worry about get enought guys.
"He was told to enter the Navy in another capacity, then apply for eye surgery, then transfer later."
If SEAL is the only thing he wants in the Navy, it might be risky to join first and be disappointed if he can't transfer.
My son was interested in Lasik even though he met the new Feb 09 standards. If I recall correctly, there was only a 6 month wait to join Navy with SO contract after surgery. I'd bet there is a 6 month wait if he got the procedure in the Navy also, but I'm not sure. My son went anyway, but if he needed it to pass standards, I think I would have advised him to do it at home first.
Transfer can be difficult. His roommate in pre-BUD/S couldn't transfer from rescue diver, so he had to quit Navy instead of re-up and re-enlist with SO contract.
I think I would have advised him to do it at home first.
My son was told to absolutely not have lasik on his own and doing so would require an extra year wait. He was told the Navy needed SEALS and would take care of it, however taking another critical job would probably prevent him from moving into SEALS. Then later they wanted to know why he wasn't going into nuclear. Needless to say we have heard many conflicting suggestions.
If you can have it done at home before he goes into the Navy then he could wait and go in with a SEAL Contract. If he joins the Navy in another Rate then he would need to sign up for a Rate that does not require a lot of training. The reason for this is that if the Navy invest lots of money training someone they will except them to stay in that Rate so they get their moneys worth. They will not like the idea of training someone for a year and a half or longer (Boot Camp, A School and maybe C School) just to have they request a transfer. If SEAL is the only thing he wants then he may want to have the operation done at home and if there is a problem he may or may not want to join. If he joins and there is a problem he will already be in the Navy and will have to serve his commitment.
There are so many guys that do not understand that their dream of becoming a SEAL is a very hard thing to accomplish. With the new rule of one roll back, then your done will not help the BUDS guys. Now about than 75% of a class do not make it to the Teams. I have seen guys get rolled 3 or more times but since they changed the rules to one and done that will mean the percentage makes it through may drop. If you are dropped or DOR you will get your choice of maybe 3 or 4 available Rates and from what I have read don't expect it to be something you would have chosen. I have talked to many moms and dads of guys that got dropped or DORed and half say they guy is down and really wishes he had not joined. The other have says there guys are OK and they don't mind their Rate. Most say their guy will not try again after their 2 year wait for another chance.
Talk with you son and explain the options, explain the new rules and discuss the fact that Pre-BUDS will ship 200 guys to Coronado and after BO and Hell Week they will probably be 70-85 still in class. After HW they have about 3 more weeks, Phase II, Phase III and SQT. The guys can get rolled all the way up to the end of SQT.
Good luck to you Son. My GS was very fortunate to have started BUDS Class 273 with 170 guys and finish SQT Class 273 with 45. Nine guys started in the class and 36 rolled into the class as it progress from Phase to Phase.
Thanks for the info. He is already at Boot Camp and scheduled PIR of 10/7. At MEPS, I guess they "guided" him to a different rate. From all I read, I'm interpreting it to mean, it is very unlikely he will have the opportunity to switch to SEALS, but I could be wrong. He's going in as AECF, which I believe ET has a CREO 1. I'm also wondering, would they attempt to switch him to Nuke ET once there? He got a 97 on his ASVAB. Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question.
These guys have made a movie about SEALs in conjunction with NSW. Been waiting a super long time for info on release, and they had a huge spread in the Wall Street Journal today on the movie to be released Feb 17. Sort of hybrid of Documentary and Fiction.
